3. Duties of the Post

The Specialty Grade post is regarded as a core part of the Clinical Team, providing continuity of care and medical back up on site. The post holder will have responsibility for providing a comprehensive range of services in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team to adult patients with severe and enduring mental health problems within the locality. He or she will be expected to cover for colleagues during absences in line with the arrangements set out in the National Terms and Conditions. The postholder will agree a job plan, with the Clinical Lead and Divisional Medical Director. It is envisaged that the sessional commitment would likely be:

Nine sessions direct clinical care to include 1 session of a group task which is 4 hours of clinical time nominally allocated for a flexible responsibility; negotiated at job planning and relevant to local, area and partnership service need and the development interest of the post holder. Examples include a specialist clinic, CBT, s22 inpatient work, extra involvement in committees or clinical governance etc.

Plus 1 session of Supporting Professional Activity including Continuing Professional Development, teaching and training, supervision, audit and research

The final timetable is subject to the review by the supervising Consultant and Clinical Lead, depending on the needs of the service, in line with job planning arrangements.

The main clinical responsibilities are the ongoing management of patients with severe and enduring mental illness and assessment and management of new referrals. This is organised through weekly outpatient clinics together with acute work and domiciliary visits as required to provide an emergency response and urgent advice to patients and their GPs. There is an ongoing process of continuing patient review at Riverview to which the Specialty Grade would be expected to contribute. In this catchment area there is a diverse population giving the opportunity to become involved with the assessment and treatment of a wide variety of mental disorders within this population. The post holder will be expected to provide additional medical leadership to the team and assist with the further development of the service. There is excellent support from a skilled and motivated multi-disciplinary team.
