Project Title:

Microsoft Word and Internet: Specific Famous Americans Report with Descriptive Paragraph and Picture

(Amelia Earhart/ Eleanor Roosevelt/ Lou Gehrig)

(4 days)

Description of Technology Integration:

Students will use predetermined websites to collect data to generate a descriptive paragraph containing facts about the topic.

An appropriate picture will be located on the Internet to enhance the descriptive paragraph. This image will be copied from the Internet and pasted into the document.

Learning Objective(s):

  1. Students will word process a descriptive paragraph with information obtained from the Internet.
  2. Students will import a picture from the Internet into their document.

Materials Needed:

  • Sample of finished project
  • Graphic organizer for facts (handout for students, file for teacher)
  • Clipboards
  • Erasable pens/pencils
  • Favorite to: MLT Resource Page (

Introduction and Basic Information:

  • Discussion of different Americans, Amelia Earhart, Eleanor Roosevelt and Lou Gehrig, who have contributed to the success and spirit of our country. Elicit prior knowledge of these three people. Share videos of Earhart and Roosevelt
  • Share completed project

Procedures:

Day One: Internet research

  • Open Internet Explorer and choose MLT Resources from Favorite list. Click on link to Specific Famous Americans Word Project. Explore different links to locate an appropriate website on the topic. (Some students may need to use Yahooligans or KidsClick to perform a search. Model this using Vision)
  • Use graphic organizer to record facts.

(Teacher can open graphic organizer file and record information on the screen that students can copy from, if desired)

Day Two: Internet Research/Word Processing

  • Open Internet Explorer and choose MLT Resources from Favorite list. Click on link to Specific Famous American Word Project. Explore different links to locate an appropriate website on the topic. (Some students may need to use Yahooligans or KidsClick to perform a search.)
  • Use graphic organizer to record facts.

If finished with research, begin word processing document:

  • Type title using: center, underline, bold, change font size (24 point) of title
  • Press Enter key twice to move down two lines.
  • Press the Bold and Underline buttons to deselect. Adjust font size to 14 points.
  • Students will type their names
  • Press Enter key twice
  • Use Align Left button on formatting toolbar to get back to left justification
  • Press the Tab key to indent.
  • Reinforce basic WP skills (spacing, Enter, capitalization)
  • Spell check discussion
  • Students will transfer recorded facts into paragraph form
  • Save file

Day Three: Continue Word Processing

  • Retrieve file
  • Continue typing recorded facts
  • Spellcheck
  • Save file

Day Four: Copy/Paste picture from Internet, change font and print document

  • Retrieve file
  • Find picture on Internet, Copy/Paste/Resize picture
  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Open Internet Explorer and choose MLT Resources from Favorite list. Click on link to Specific Famous Americans Word Project. Explore different links to locate an appropriate picture. (Some students may need to use Yahooligans or KidsClick to search for a picture.)
  • Let students explore websites and select picture
  • Use Vision to demonstrate copy picture by selecting picture and right-clicking on mouse
  • Let students copy picture
  • Use Vision to demonstrate switching to Word (Minimize Internet Explorer) and paste picture by right-clicking on document and pasting
  • Let students paste picture
  • Use zoom to adjust to Whole Page to preview entire project
  • Double-click on picture, click on Layout tab, choose Square, click OK
  • Demonstrate how to move and resize picture
  • Save now!
  • Change Font
  • Use edit---select all to select all text and change font. Click anywhere on document once font is selected to deselect text
  • Save again!
  • Print

Other Considerations:

  • Border for entire document, if time allows
