Lesson Plan - Greetings Among Peers

Stage 1: What will students know and be able to do at the end of this lesson?

KNOW: Words such as Bawo ni?, daadaa ni, O “he, she or it”; Won “they or their”, kinship terms such as Baba, mama; word for household “ile”, word for work, ise.

DO: They will be able to greet a colleague, friend or peer

Stage 2: How will you know that students can do that?

I will give them a role play to perform such as “you meet your friend or colleague on the way to the market, greet him or her”

Stage 3: What instructional activities will be used? (Use as many as necessary to achieve your learning targets.)

Opening/Activity 1: The teacher will state the performance objectives “Lonii, a maa ko nipa ikini laaarin egbe- Today we will learn how to greet our peers”

Activity 2: The teacher models how such a greeting takes place or shows a video tape of two peers greeting one another. This will be done orally several times using different comprehensible input strategies to make sure the learners understand the model that the teacher is presenting.

Activity 3: The teacher asks the learners to repeat the dialogue or the model after him or her – repetition will be (a) in a group (teacher and the learners; (b) in two groups (learners Vs learners); (c) in pairs (learner to learner)

Activity 4: The teacher gives each pair a role play to practice among themselves until the teacher is sure everyone can play the role.

Closing/Activity 5: Each pair performs the role play to the rest of the class.

Materials needed for this lesson: Pictures of people working to illustrate the meaning of “ise”; pictures of different Yoruba families to illustrate the meaning of “ile” household or family. Also a picture of two friends greeting each other.
