YourPlanfortheFuture (YPFF) College & Career Search

Subject and level: Guidance, Grade 10 Time for lesson: 45 minutes

Topic: YPFF College or Career Search Focus Question: How to search for college/career information

Materials Needed: Laptops (cart or library), index cards with usernames and passwords, PowerPoint presentation, College Search worksheet, Occupation Search Worksheet, pens or pencils

Goal of the lesson:
Students will perform a college or occupation search to gather important information that they may not have previous knowledge of.
Teacher Performance Objectives:
Assist students logging on to YPFF
Assist students with navigating YPFF site and finding information related to their career or college
Ensure each student has filled out worksheet and understands the information
Student Performance Objectives:
Students will learn how to use YPFF College or Career Search tool
Students will understand the different variables involved in searching for a college
Students will know where on YPFF to find more information regarding colleges or careers
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to navigate YPFF to further explore colleges and/or careers
Activity:
Distribute computers from laptop cart and have students log on.
Display PowerPoint on overhead and hand out presentation.
Have students choose whether they will search a college or occupation. Hand out appropriate worksheets
Have students go to and go to Colleges- college search.
Explain the College Search tool and the various ways to use it (location, size, sports, campus life, cost, majors). The PowerPoint shows exactly where students can find the information.
Explain the Career search tool and the various ways to use it. The PowerPoint shows exactly where students should be and how to find information.
Explain that the students should write clearly on the worksheets and that the worksheets will be hung up throughout the school to give other students the information.
Pre Assessment:
3 out of 140 students have completed the college list on YPFF.

Post Assessment:
College or career list saved on YPFF
Completion of the College Search or Career Search Worksheet (attached)
SPED/504 Accommodations: Individual attention will be provided to students who may need extra assistance or clarifications. Technical teacher may be asked to assist. Each student’s accommodations will be followed according to X2.
Reflection/Summary:
Students need more than 45 minutes to complete the college or career search and perform the research asked for on the worksheets. There also needs to be time to provide students with definitions of terms on the worksheet and their importance. Only 10 out of the 75 sophomores presented with this lesson plan completed the worksheet.
Data Analysis:
This lesson plan was presented to three different sophomore class periods. Class #1 had 25 students, Class #2 had 26 students, and Class #3 had 24 students.
Class #1: 20 completed or had previously completed the college list, 22 completed or had previously completed the career list, and 4 completed the worksheet.
Class #2: 19 completed or had previously completed the college list, 22 completed or had previously completed the career list, and 6 completed the worksheet.
Class #3: 20 completed or had previously completed the college list, 18 completed or had previously completed the career list, and 0 completed the worksheet.
Entire Sophomore Class: 63 out of 140 have completed the college list, 121/140 has saved a career of interest to their career plan, and only 10/75 hascompleted the college or career worksheet.
