Design and Drawing for Production

Instructor: Mr. Dowd

Classroom number: 230

Course description:

This course integrates the elements of design with the drafting skills required to produce quality mechanical drawings. Using the tools of the draftsperson the student receives instruction to help him or her gain competence in drawing two and three view, sectional, and isometric drawings. The students then use these skills to design various products and then build their designs in the lab to see an actual full-sized model.

Course requirements:

Students are required to complete several drawing projects. The quality and overall presentation of these projects will be used to determine the grade. Particular attention to detail will be emphasized. Students will be required to accumulate skills from the beginning of the course and will be expected to build on their skills with each successive project.

Grading:

Class projects 60%

Work habits and Participation 20%

Mid-term project and Final Exam 20%

Safety:

Safety is the number one priority in all of my classes. In this class several tools will be used that will require training as well as a demonstration on proper usage and the associated safety. There is a no tolerance policy when it comes to safety. Unsafe or improper use of a tool, or any unsafe behavior, will result in severe disciplinary action. If a student demonstrates a pattern of unsafe behavior, they will be required to assume a bookwork parallel of the course, no longer participating in the regularly assigned projects.

Extra Credit:

Extra credit will be available to anyone who wants to boost his or her grade. Extra credit will be offered in the form of an additional design/drawing project or research project depending on available time. The maximum points allowed to be earned will be 5 extra points on your average. No more than this will be allowed!

Extra Help:

Tuesdays after school until 3:30

Check with me in advance or check my website for any exceptions. Alternate times may also be arranged with me. Some sessions may have to be planned in advance to allow for the materials needed to be on hand.

Required Materials:

DDP is a drafting and technology lab based class. In this environment effective storage of projects and materials is critical to student success. The items listed below will aid your student with this task.

·  1 combination lock

·  1 folder

·  1 sharpie

·  10 or 12 pack of pencils

Academic Integrity Policy:

It has been an unfortunate event in the past when projects have been lost, stolen or vandalized. To minimize this occurrence I am asking that all students and parents/guardians sign the following lines below indicating that they are aware of the academic integrity policy and the consequences of not abiding by it.

Procedures:

·  All work must have a name or initials on it from the onset

·  All work has to be stored in a locked draw or locker

·  Damaging another students project is strictly forbidden

·  Stealing another students project is strictly forbidden

Consequences:

·  If the above is not followed and a project is lost, it is that student’s responsibility to make up the lost work.

·  If it is shown that a student has stolen or vandalized another student’s work, the offending student will receive a zero for the project and a disciplinary referral. The referral will most likely result with the school issuing ISS or OSS.

Tools and Safety:

All students will be required to use the tools of the technology lab. This includes heavy duty woodworking machinery which can cause severe injury. Students are instructed on safety and are expected to follow all safety rules. If a student is not comfortable using tools it is their responsibility to find an alternative course as soon as possible. If a student does not follow the safety procedures they will be removed from the course.
