TKAM Iceberg ProjectMy Character: ______

Goal: To demonstrate analysis skills and understanding of characterization used by Harper Lee

Product: Iceberg Metaphor Graphic (11x17 paper provided)

Step I - Your graphic portrait must include: The Tip of the Iceberg - Above the surface

  1. A word label (or two) for the character which sums up that character’s surface reputation in the town of Maycomb. (Eg: Proud)
  2. A visual symbolic representation of the surface-reputation label based on how the character is generally perceived by others. This illustration should be based on the person’s outward character, rather than his/her physical appearance.
  1. 2-3 quotes/Text evidence (with page numbers) to support the surface label you have chosen for your character. Surface-reputation text evidence will probably be found in the opening chapters of the novel.
  2. Include 1-2 sentences analyzing the effect of each quote as it develops character.

Step II - Beneath the surface

  1. A word label (or two) for the character which sums up that character’s BELOW-surface depth of character and functionality.
  2. A visual symbolic representation of the BELOW-surface label of the character’s hidden self, based on the things that Scout (narrator) comes to understand about the person upon reflection.
  1. 3-4 quotes/Text evidence (with page numbers) to support the below-surface label you have chosen for your character.
  2. Include 1-2 sentences analyzing the effect of each quote as it develops character

Step III - Periodic sentence thesis claim about your character

  1. The periodic sentence emphasizes its main idea by placing it at the end, following all the subordinate clauses and other modifiers that support the principal idea. The sentence unfolds gradually, so that the thought contained in the subject/verb group only emerges at the sentence's conclusion – creating suspense.
  2. Ex: While some/many people in the town of Maycomb see [character name] as ______, s/he is truly ______because ______, which develops Harper Lee’s theme of ______.
