WSCA Board Meeting, minutes2/27/14

Meeting began 5:10. Welcome and review the WSCA Board Meeting Ground Rules. Ground rules were read aloud.
Review of committee actions and discussion of committee direction and Board support:
Conference committee: Attendance at WSCA conference: 568 last year, 614 thus far this year. 2014 is the largest WSCA conference to date.
Professional recognition committee: Nominees were notified in December, principals were given the opportunity to nominate school counselors in their buildings. Need to recruit a committee co chair. There is a need to develop a rubric for ranking nominees.
Currently called Govt. Relations: 69% increase from last year as far as participation. Nice representative group of counselors, students, and counselor educators attended the Day on the Hill.
Membership Committee. ASCA workabout webinars, discussion of how to increase membership. 903 members in WSCA currently, out of 2100 total number in the state. This is a good percentage, comparison states tend to be around 20 or 30 %.
Technology committee: Discussion of Yap appwhich gave access to the WSCA 2014 conference. Looking at formats for Webinar platforms.
Framework committee: RTI model will be posted on the website soon. Melded 3 tier RTI model with the ASCA model to place on the framework. Desire to create pages of resources and ideas generated from WSCA school counselors. Web site is in process for alignment with ASCA 3rd edition, currently aligned with 2nd.
Ethics chair not present.
Recognition and Welcome incoming Boardas follows: President Elect- Cydney Bacon, High School VP- Michael Van Buskirk, Elementary VP- Louise Berman, Secretary- Anne Parker, Treasurer- Lauren Moore, Graduate Student Rep- Gina Grego
Executive Board meeting 6:30. Approval of Minutes from November19, 2013Minutes approved as written, motion carried.
Board Members share recent highlights –connected to Ends Policies:
Suicide prevention information-House 1336. Discussion of WSCA providing suicide prevention training at the conference. Discussion of the many youth – serving committees, and how they interface.
Evaluation tool for School Counselors. Discussion that school counselor evaluation document will need to include some or various types
Government Relations-updates on Day on the Hill. Government Relations committee name change is suggested: “Advocacy Committee.” The rationale, better represent committee’s spirit, focus, and encourage involvement. Motion for name change made and seconded. Motion carried.
Discussion of high, middle, and elementary counselor ratios.
Treasurers Report: $66,000 currently. Conference has outgo and income which will figure into this.
New Business: Registration opened today for OSPI Technology and Data conference in June. $99 for 2 days for WSCA members, $125 if not; this covers the cost of conference. 300 spots available.
