The WWP Wimbledon Path
About:
The Wimbledon Path is an easy and picturesque 5 mile route that gently covers Wimbledon Common, passing tranquil ponds, forestry and the iconic heritage site of the Windmill,all with easy access to amenities and the rest of Wimbledon.
This guide is designed to help you understand more about the path and the route, providing details on timings, transportation and finding your way around , and is part of the Wimbledon Walking Project.
How to get there
All Wimbledon Walking Project walks “start” at the War Memorial, near Wimbledon High Street ,but as the Wimbledon Path is a loop so can be accessed anywhere. Below are ways how to get to the War Memorial Starting Point. (Park and Walk is also avaliable, see Facilities section). Also see www.tfl.gov.co.uk for more details and planning your journey.
Buses:
From Putney, you can take the 93 towards North Cheam and get off at the stop “Wimbledon Village: Rose & Crown”. From Wimbledon you can take the 93 towards Putney Bridge and get off at the same stop. Also if you are coming from Richmond, you can also take the 493 to the area.
Train
The nearest one is Wimbledon Rail Station. To get to the main starting point, as you leave the station , turn right along Wimbledon Hill Road. Continue straight on past the crossroads and library. As you walk up the hill ,on your left you will see Wimbledon High School. When you reach the top of the hill, continue straight on past various shops along Wimbledon High Street through the Village. Follow this road until you see the War Memorial on the left. (10-15mins)
Directions
The Directions are split into 5 easy sections.

Section 1: War Memorial to Cannizaro Park Road
As you face towards the memorial, turn left along Parkside heading away from the common. Then after 75m , turn right and walk along the Bridleway/Path by Southside Common. Follow this road for a while until you reach the end , where you will see on your left King’s College School. Now, follow the path that runs along “Westside Common” Road. Soon, there will be a walking path on your right, (Just before Chester Road on the left). As you walk along this path, head towards Rushmere Pond in the middle of area. Once you pass here, you will end up at the crossroads of the Causeway and Cannizaro Park road.
Section 2: Cannizaro Park Road to Robin Hood Ride
Follow Cannizaro Park Road for less than 50m and turn left along a main pathway, known as Memorial Ride which will be a straight and open stretch. Continue along here until you reach Windmill Road. Upon reaching here, turn left and follow the curving road past the Thatched Cottage. Follow the path past Sunset Road on the left and later Springwell Cottage. This then joins onto Robin Hood ride and continue for a good 1km until you reach a large crossroads. (Stag Ride, with a Horse Exercise Area further upwards)
Section 3: Stag Ride to the Windmill
Follow Stag Ride for over 300m until there is a sharp turn to the left (known as Gravelly Ride) . Follow this road for roughly a 1km passing a Horse Ring on the right and later a large golf course. Eventually, you will join up along Windmill Road and take the main straight road northwards (to the left). Simply follow this road for another 500 odd metres until you reach the Windmill and Carpark.
Section 4: The Windmill to Someset Road
Continue northwards (same way as before) along the main Windmill path. Follow for a few hundred metres until you come across a crossroads. Turn right along the Horse Ride Bridleway. After arounda couple hundred metres, take a gentle sloping path to the right and continue along it (heading South). Continue until you hit a main road and turn left. You will soon note buildings on the left, and then turn right following path next to Wimbledon Park Side. As you walk you should note a hospital on the opposite side of the main road. Walk for around 200m until you see Somerset Ride on the right, and Somerset Road on the left.
Section 5:Somerset Road to the War Memorial
Simply continue along this straight path (which joins onto Nurse’s walk) passing Bluegate Pond. Finally, follow the A219 (Wimbledon RoadSide) left at the junction near Cannizaro Park and you will see the War Memorial Ahead, Congratulations- you have done the WWP’s Wimbledon Path 5 mile walk!
Facilities:
There are cafes and shops near the War Memorial at the Main Starting Point of the walk along Wimbledon High Street. There is also a cafe and toilet facilities near Wimbledon Windmill. There is also parking avaliable at the Windmill, if you wish to “Park & Walk”
