Dear Parents / Carers

May 2017 Newsletter

After the shocking and heart-breaking events in Manchester on Monday all of us in school have been thinking and praying for all those affected.

Such shocking events can be very difficult for young children to understand and we have been supporting the children to try to make sense of what is happening around them.

Our aim has been to reassure the children and help them cope with their thoughts and feelings after such a traumatic event. Our children also need to hear from us messages of hope, tolerance and kindness.

Children have discussed the events in their classes and we held an assembly and one minute silence at 11.00am today.

No Uniform Day – Friday 26th May

This Friday is a No Uniform Day. We will be making a collection for the ‘We Love Manchester’ Emergency Fund.

School Closure

School closes for the Whit holidays on Friday 26th May and reopens on Monday 12th June.

Please remember that school is also closed on Monday 10th July.

School Fair – Saturday 17th June

The school fair is being held on Saturday 17th June and, as ever, there is a lot to do before the fair and on the day itself. The fair is our biggest fundraising event and we need your help!

We are now collecting items for this year’s fair. We are collecting ‘good as new’ toys and games to sell on our toy stall, prizes for the raffle and any school uniform that you no longer need along with school coats, Brownie, Cub, Scout and Rainbow uniforms - in good condition please!

We desperately need donations of bottles and chocolate for the Tombola’s. Please send these into school at any time between now and Saturday 17th.

Raffle tickets are on sale in the playground. The raffle prizes are amazing! Thank you so much to Ella and Megan’s mum for twisting the arm of so many companies to provide these prizes for our raffle.

4th Theme – ‘Great Britons’ – Design a Badge Competition

Our school curriculum year is split up into 4 separate 9 weeks blocks. The themes are detailed on our website www.calegreen.stockport.sch.uk under: Curriculum / Creative Curriculum / Theme Overview.

We have now begun our final 4th theme of the year. This is a whole school theme called ‘Great Britons’. The theme aims to celebrate the impact of scientists, artists, engineers, authors, sportsmen and sportswomen both in Great Britain and across the world!

To celebrate this theme we would like the children to design a circular or rectangular badge. The only ‘rules’ are that the badge must contain the theme title ‘Great Britons’ and this school year ‘2016/17’.

Everyone who enters will get a special prize and the winner will have the honour of seeing their design made up into a badge which be given to every child in school. The closing date for entries is Friday 16th June.

Keeping Ourselves Safe Week – Monday 12th – Friday 16th June

‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’ week takes place during the first week after the Whit holidays. There will be a range of activities designed to promote a healthy lifestyle choices. There will be special assemblies throughout the week as well as workshops from the NSPCC, visits from the Dental Health Nurse, activities on good health and hygiene, e-safety, road safety and many others.

Bike to School Week – Monday 12th – Friday 16th June

During this week we encourage every child to come to school on their bike, scooter or walk to school.

On Thursday 15th June (which is National Clean Air Day) there will be a special ‘Bike It’ day with lots of different cycle / scooter related activities – including Dr. Bike (who will be at school from 8.00am to diagnose and fix minor problems with your bike - parent’s bikes too) and a ‘Bling Your Bike’ competition.

Sports Day – Friday 16th June – No Uniform Day

Sports Day is on Friday 16th June at Stockport Cricket Club. Key Stage 1 will compete in the morning and the Key Stage 2 will compete in the afternoon. This will be a No Uniform Day. Children should wear sportswear / PE kit.

Year 6 children (who organise Sports Day) have requested that the money raised be donated to go towards the cost of a defibrillator which will be located in school.

Please provide your child with a £1.00 donation for this charity. You are all welcome to come and watch (don’t worry – we do not have any parent races!).

Finally, there have been many shared inspirational messages this week and one which has been important to us has been - be kind, be kind to everyone around you, be defiantly kind.
