AS-L Mini Grant Recipients 2016-2017:

Dr. Christine Chim – Assistant Professor, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; CPP 5407 – Ambulatory Care

Working with Northwell Health, Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine at Hofstra University, this project can serve as a precedent and model for integration into the residency curriculum as a regular experience. Home visits would serve as a unique venue for an interprofessional approach to patent care and education. SJU students will serve. SJU students will be exposed to the needs of the community not only in a clinical setting, but also in patient’s home or a community center. Funding will be applied towards purchasing a portable printer, iPad with case and keyboard with supplies. This will enable students to print out timely resources for the patients in their home including taking pictures of filled pillboxes and printing that for the patients as a reference as they fill their pillboxes. The iPad will be used to document data collected during the visit and serve as a resources for looking up drug information/other patient education material. Dr. Chim is aware that the equipment will be the property of the Office of Academic Service-Learning.

Dr. Samantha Jellinek-Cohen – Assistant Clinical Professor, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; CPP 3154 – Community Health Advocacy and Outreach

Working with the Academic Success Center of the Office of Student Services of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, they will co-host a health fair on campus focusing on the education and prevention of prescription drug misuse among college students, which is a national epidemic and prevalent amount college students. Funding will be applied towards promotional material (educational aids, buttons, keychains, brochures, handouts, etc. and refreshments for the fair).

Dr. Chung-Shien Lee – Assistant Professor, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; CPP 5407 – Ambulatory Care

Working with the Queens Library SJU students working with the Queens Cancer Center of Queens Hospital, they will be partnering to bring much-needed information and education to the Queens community. Information sessions will be held at Libraries throughout the borough as well as senior centers to provide “Ask the Pharmacist” sessions and/or brown bag events which will include medication reviews, and sessions on health topics such as diabetes will be provided. These sessions are also provided to patients who are disabled or unable to travel to any of the sites via telephone conferences. Funding will be applied towardsproviding participants with pillboxes to help manage their medication.

Dr. Kimberly Ng – Assistant Clinical Professor, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; CPP 5415 – Focused Inpatient Care and CPP 5412 – Key Concepts/Provision of Pharmacist-Delivered Care

Working with the New York City Department for the Aging, SJU students will participate in a series of brown bag medication reviews which will include blood pressure checks at the Department of the Aging’s network of senior centers and Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities. Additionally fall prevention workshops will be provided on a monthly basis. Funding will be applied towards providing participants with pillboxes to help manage their medication and to purchase automatic blood pressure machines.

Dr. Michele Pisano, Assistant Professor, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; CPP 5407 – Ambulatory Care Clerkship

Working with North Shore – LIJ Heath System Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine SJU students will counsel patients on their medications, and assess compliance and adherence. Additionally students will engage in interprofessional teams to manage challenging patient cases. SJU students will counsel the patients on proper administration, side effects and drug interactions and provide each patient on multiple medications with a laminated medication list stating when and how to take each medication. Funding will be applied to purchase a laminating machine, laminating pouches and miscellaneous supplies for the medication lists. Dr. Pisano is aware that the laminator will be the property of the Office of Academic Service-Learning.

Dr. Suzanne Miller Thompson, Assistant Professor and Jason Thompson, Audiology Clinical Coordinator, St. Johns. College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; CSD 420 – Clinical Practicum in Audiology for Speech Pathology Students

Working with Ss. Joachim & Anne elementary school in Queens Village SJU students will offer free hearing screenings since NYC no longer offers school-based hearing assessment. With parental consent children will be tested at the school with Dr. Miller Thompson present for all testing. Data will be collected for a research project designed to diagnose temporary hearing loss in nursery school through second grade children. Funding will be applied to supplies needed for the hearing tests such as rubber gloves, disposable earpiece covers, alcohol swabs, three different sizes of each pieces, etc.
