This document is intended to help you and the Police identify your horse and property if they go missing and help prove ownership.

Report any theft to the Police. Ensure you are given a crime reference number and write it down.

Inform Cumbria Horse Watch who will put an alert out to all members.

If your horse or property is registered with a security company, i.e. Smartwater, Farm Key, etc., notify them immediately.

Check websites, auctions, dealers, press and Horse magazines. Provide details to local yards and riding clubs so that as many people as possible are looking out for your property.

Contact the local press for their help with publicity.

Remember if your horse or property cannot be identified they are unlikely to be returned to you. Make sure your horses are freeze branded or micro-chipped. Tack, rugs, tools, trailers and lorries are post coded, micro-chipped or have Smartwater on them. Details of suppliers are available from Cumbria Horse Watch and Cumbria Constabulary.

As well as informing the Police report any accidents / incidents involving your horse to the British Horse Society at www.horseaccidents.org.uk
