My university life

In the past two-year university life, I require to handle different types of problems that I haven’t faced before. The reason is that university is different phase of study for me in terms of studying mode and environment. Fortunately, I have studied in the Hong Kong Shue Yan College for two years and therefore get some experience about the learning methods of the post-secondary institutions. Therefore, I can quickly adapt to different form of studying life and get a satisfactory academic performance in the City University of Hong Kong. However, many students may say that university life is the life of pursuing academic excellence. It is not completely correct as we also need to enhance our personal and career development in our university life. After reviewing my life in the university, learning practical and professional knowledge, participating various extra-curricular activities and planning for future career are the important parts of my university life.

The most important part of my university life is that I can enrich my life by learning some practical and professional knowledge through the study of core and major subjects. Recently, many people criticize that the syllabus of university is not practical for the future career. However, it is not the case that I have studied in the university. In fact, I can learn some business and computer knowledge from core subjects other than major subjects. For example, Management Information Systems is a practical subject that requires basic business concepts and computer application to the commercial world. So I need to contribute different concepts and creative ideas related to business field and learn new computer software in order to finish the project. On the other hand, the major subjects such as Economic and Business Forecasting do not only enhance my analytical skill, but also upgrade my professional knowledge in business and financial fields.

Apart from the professional knowledge learnt from the university, I also actively participate various kinds of extra-curricular activities in order to widen my outlook and develop my personal and social skills. Although I have attended the society of Economics Department in the Hong Kong Shue Yan College, it is only related to the knowledge of my studying programme. So I cannot enrich my life beyond the major subject. In the City University of Hong Kong, I have actively participated various extra-curricular activities. For example, I have been a member of the Astronomy Society as I am fond of learning the knowledge of the universe. And the most important thing is that I can widen my knowledge in non-academic field and continue my interest in astronomy. Also, I have joined the Supplemental Instruction Scheme in year two and acted as a leader in order to help the fresh student to cope with the difficulties of their core subject. In the experience of this scheme, I can develop my communication and social skills as I need to guide and teach the first-year student.

Last but not least, planning for future career is one of the important parts in my university life as I need to equip myself in order to pave the way of my future career in financial field. As we all know, the competition of searching jobs is still very intense in Hong Kong. Therefore, we should pay more effort on the preparation for future career. As our university has provided sufficient resources to support the job application, I can easily search useful information about the job requirement and then equip myself with the relevant skills. For example, I have passed some papers in the Licensing Examinations for Securities and Futures Intermediaries. Also, skills of searching and applying for jobs are greatly improved as a result of the career fairs and workshops provided by the Student Development Services.

As a conclusion, my life in the City University of Hong Kong is extremely challenging and beneficial to me. The main reason is that university life gives me the chance of upgrading knowledge in academic and non-academic field, nurturing personal skills as well as enhancing future career planning. In fact, in the final year of study, I think that many difficulties such as personal and academic stresses may impede the success of my university life. However, I will not give up no matter what frustration may happen in the future.
