United Way of Palm Beach County (UWPBC) is a local, volunteer-driven organization with the mission to measurably improve the lives of individuals and families in Palm Beach County by uniting the resources of donors, volunteers, agencies and the community. In 2004, UWPBC moved toward a Community Impact model for funding to more effectively and measurably meet its mission. UWPBC plans to award new funding contracts for fiscal year July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009,to address the following Community Impact Area goals:

Improving Futures for Children and
Families
- Children enter school ready to learn
- Youth grow up healthy and confident
- Parents provide a safe and nurturing environment
Providing Food, Shelter and
Emergency Needs
Residents of Palm Beach County:
- Are food secure
- Avoid homelessness
- Have safe, affordable, permanenthousing
- Know what services are available and how to access them
Promoting Independence for People with
Disabilities
Adults with disabilities:
- Maintain living situation of choice
- Have safe, meaningful and productive daytime activities
- Have access to available programs and services
Improving the Lives of Seniors
- Seniors, caregivers, and senior providers access information and services
- Seniors achieve physical, mental and social well-being
- Seniors maintain or improve their economic self-sufficiency

Priority funding will be given for the following:
- Programs that promote collaborations among multiple partners to meet the needs of the population.
- Programs directed toward moving individuals, families and underserved communities toward self-sufficiency. Self-sufficiency can also be defined as financial stability.(UWPBC Prosperity Campaign program services are attached as reference to financial stability.)
- Programs that encompass multiple goals within or across Impact Areas.
- Programs addressing emerging and/or unmet community needsthat address the goalsof one or more ofUWPBC's four Impact Areas.
Funding Process
UWPBC will use a two-part application process. The first part of the process will be the submission of a Letter of Intent (LOI) to apply. One LOI should be submitted for each program seeking funding. This form will be available starting December 17, under Funding Forms at All prospective applicants will be required to submit a LOI.
UWPBC will identify those applicants most likely to achieve the identified goals, and that best fit the priorities of Community Impact. The LOI process will be highly competitive. An applicant orientation will be held December 28and January 4, with both meetings starting at 9a.m. at The Countess de Hoernle Community Campus, United Way of Palm Beach County. Attendance is not mandatory, and you only need to attend one of the scheduled meetings. This meeting will address current priorities and allow prospective applicants to ask questions about funding goals.
During the second part of the funding process, agencies with an approved LOI will be invited to submit a full grant application. Applicants may be asked to submit a proposal on only a portion of their submitted LOI. Proposal guidelines will accompany this invitation. Please note that the submission of a proposal does not guarantee funding in whole or in part.
Eligibility Criteria to submit a LOI:
- Applicant organization must be located in Palm Beach County (with permanent address) and serve residents living in Palm Beach County.
- Applicant organization must be a 501(c) (3) human service nonprofit organization.
- Applicants must adhere to UWPBC Standards of Accountability.
- Applicant must have a recent Audit and Tax Form 990.
Important Dates:
- LOIapplicant orientation meetings will be held December 28and January 4 at 9 a.m. at The Countess de Hoernle Community Campus, United Way of Palm Beach County. Applicants are encouraged to RSVP for the orientations to Tamara Worley at (561) 375-6630 or
- LOI must be received by UWPBC by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 18.No postmarks.
- Contract(s) will be awarded for a period of one year, July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009, with option for renewal.
