The aim of developing and sharing this booklet if to provide safety information to districts (teachers, parents and students) who are wantingtousetoolsformakingprojectsthatarebeingdeveloped, or encouraged,forthenewADSTcurriculum.Thisbookletisstillinthedevelopmentstage.

Due diligence:

Due diligence requires taking all reasonablesteps to protect workers fromharm. 'All reasonable steps' is based on thelevel of judgment andcare that apersonwould reasonably be expected todo under the circumstances. Anorganization that actively manages health and safety andtakes all reasonable steps to protect workers from harmis being dulydiligent.

Due diligence requires that you:

  • Identify allworkspace/ workplace hazards
  • Implement all necessary preventive measures
  • Communicate appropriately to all necessary personnel

An active safety management approach— one that demonstrates due diligence— ensures that workers (students)areprovided with valuable safety information, instruction and training.

beforeplugginginanyportablepowertool.
SecureYourWork / Largemachinesstayinplacewhilethematerialmoves.Withportablemachines,thetoolmovesandthematerialissupposedtostayinplace—makesureitdoes!Putthestockinavice,clampittoaworkbenchorwedgeitinacorner,butdon’ttrytoholdasmallpieceofmaterialinonehandwhileyouapproachitwithapowertoolheldintheotherhand.
RemoveBattery / Removebatterywheneveryouarechangingbits,replacingbladesorfixingsomethingonthetool.

JIGSAWOPERATION

1.Always wear safety glasses when using power tools.

2.Never talk or disturb someone while they are working witha machine.

3.Always ask teacher permission before using the tool.

4.Disconnect power or unplug the saw when changing blades or making adjustments tothesaw.

5.Clamp the material down.

6.Check andmake sure the blade hasa clear path under the material before startingacut.

7.Plan cuts to avoid backing outof a cut.

8.Usereliefcuts when making sharp curves.

9.When making curved cuts, alwaysmove the saw forward so the teeth of the blade are cutting.

10.Keep yourfingers out of line with the blade andat least 2” away from the blade.

11.The blade should be completely stopped before lifting the blade away

from the material.

12.At the end of machine use, clean areaand place tool ina safe place so it does not fall.

13.If the blade starts cuttingwhere you do not want it to, then release

jigsawtrigger andlet the blade stop.

7.Bewareofhotdrillbitsafterdrillingholes.

8.Whenusinglargebitsordrillingsmallpieces,clampmaterialdown.

9.Makesurethedrillbithasaclearpathunderthematerialbeingdrilled,orhaveascrapblockofwoodforthedrillbittogointoafterdrillingthroughyourproject.

10.Trytohaveyourmaterialbeingdrilledinahorizontalorverticalpositionsoyoucanmoreeasilydrilltheholesquarewiththematerial.
