What is the ‘INTRO LEVEL’?

From Sharon Nelson of NADAC:

We are proud to announce the addition of ‘Intro’ as a level to the NADAC program! ‘Intro’ is a level for the classes, just like Novice, Open and Elite. So now there are four levels to each class... Intro, Novice, Open and Elite.

The intro level will be a shorter course than Novice (typically 6-10 obstacles). The only Intro level class with weaves will be Into Weavers and it will have one set of 6 poles. No other classes will have weaves in them.

The Intro level will have no tunnel/contact discriminations.

The Intro level is a full titling level with the basic titles at 30 points, Outstanding Performance at 60 points and Superior Performance at 100 points for Chances, Jumpers, Tunnelers, Weavers, Hoopers, Touch N Go and Barrelers. For regular the basic title is at 30 point, Outstanding Performance is at 100 points and Superior Performance is at 200 points.

Dogs must be 18 months old and all other NADAC rules apply. Good luck!!

Sharon Nelson

The Intro level is a great opportunity for:

  • Beginning dogs that would benefit from shorter and simpler courses for their first introduction to agility in a competition setting.
  • Dogs that may not yet being weaving very well but can do everything else.
  • Dogs coming back from time away from agility that needs some ‘get back into it’ runs.
  • Older dogs that are still sound and want to play but get too tired running a full course.
  • Trying out classes you may not have done yet to get a feel for them before entering for a full length run.

Important thing to know about Intro:

  • All rules of other levels still apply. The dog must be able to perform obstacles safely and work under control off leash, and come back to the handler at the end of the run.
  • Dogs that are out of control, unable to safely perform obstacles, or show aggression will be excused from the trial.
  • No treats or toys are allowed, training is permitted but only within the usual guidelines for the other levels.
  • You do not have to pass Intro before going into Novice and you may drop back from Novice to do runs in Intro without losing points already earned in Novice (or higher levels).
  • You may be in Intro for all or just some of your runs. So you could mix novice and intro, for example, with the same dog on every day.
  • The dog may jump at any height up to their standard measured jump height, but no higher than 16”. Measurement is not required.

MEASURING

Dogs jumping 20”, Veterans or Junior Handler Division jumping 16”, dogs entered in the Skilled category, dogs listed on the Height Exemption list and dogs with permanent height cards do NOT need to be measured. All other dogs must be measured.

For detailed information about new NADAC rules and classes go to Exhibitors Handbooks are available free of charge by downloading them from NADAC’s web site.

SKILLED AND PROFICIENT CATEGORIES

Dogs may be entered in either the Skilled or Proficient category. A dog may only be entered in one category for the entire weekend. A dog may not be entered in Skilled one day and Proficient on another day. Dogs may enter the Skilled or Proficient category in the Standard, Veteran Dog, Veteran Handler, or Junior Handler Division.

If you enter the Skilled category, you must run your dog one jump height lower than its standard jump height. (Four inches will remain the minimum jump height.) Dogs are allotted the standard course time for, and are scored and placed in, the jump height entered.

No dog entered under veteran dog, veteran handler, or junior handler may jump higher than 16” nor may it be entered at a height higher than the lowest height the dog is eligible to jump. If a handler enters as a veteran or disabled hander, that designation must be applied to all dogs handled by that handler and for all runs that weekend.

Dogs entered in either Proficient or Skilled categories may earn a 5 point qualifier in Regular Agility only. You may incur up to five course faults or five time faults and still receive a 5 point qualifying run. In all other classes you may earn ten points toward titles only if there are no time or course faults.

As of January-2014: Dogs must be entered in the Veterans Division after their 9th birthday. Dogs mustALSObe entered in the Skilled Category after their 12th birthday.

NON-JUMPING CLASSES – VETERAN OR DISABLED HANDLER

Handlers who are 60 years or older, or who have a disability that restricts mobility, may choose to enter the non-jumping classes as a Veteran Handler and receive 10% more standard course time. This option is for Veteran/Disabled handlers in the non-jumping classes only.

The Veteran/Disabled Handler division is designed for handlers who, due to age or impairment, are mobility limited and need extra time to guide their canine partners through an agility course.

When entering as a Veteran/Disabled Handler, you must enter all dogs in all classes for the entire trial in this Division and must jump 4” lower than your Proficient, Standard Division jump height require. In the non-jumping classes, dogs will be scored and placed with their Standard Division jump height.

Hoopers: Effective April 1, 2017 X-Hoopers and Numbered Hoopers were combined into a single class; Hoopers. The gates/x-pens are gone. All points from the two classes will be combined at the appropriate Levels. The hoop pattern used in X-Hoopers with the gates remains w/o the gates. You will be able to enter this area with your dog.
