CLASS TITLE:SENIOR DESIGN ENGINEER
ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)
This is engineering work performing one of the following functions: (1) evaluating district or external design production through quality assessment of design production; (2) conducting value engineering analysis of the roadway design production process to reduce costs, complexity, and inflexibility and to increase cost effectiveness; or (3) developing and coordinating the preparation of structural design plans.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

- Administers highway design standards and scheduling activities.
- Assesses quality and conformance to design criteria and motivates employees to improve quality and quantity of work performed.
- Ensures that the design and construction of roadways incorporates all engineering safety features.
- Serves as technical advisor for roadway and structure design programs and oversees and prepares specifications and standards.
- Conducts quality assessment reviews of the department's roadway design product.
- Plans workloads, work objectives, deadlines and time utilization.
- Reviews and analyzes roadway and structure plans.
- Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Knowledge of the concepts, terminology, principles and analytical techniques of roadway or structural design.
- Knowledge of mathematics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- ASSOCIATE ENGINEER
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in an area of engineering and four years of experience as an engineer; or
- A master's degree from an accredited college or university in an area of engineering and three years of experience as an engineer.
- ASSISTANT ENGINEER
- A high school diploma or its equivalent and nine years of technical or higher level engineering, drafting or surveying experience, at least four years of which must have been as an engineer; or
- An associate of arts or science degree from an accredited college or university in drafting, electronics, engineering technology or other area of engineering and six years of technical or higher level engineering, drafting or surveying experience, at least four years of which must have been as an engineer; or
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering technology and five years of technical or higher level engineering experience, at least four years of which must have been as an engineer; or
- Successful completion of an Engineer Trainee (Nonregistered) program and four years of experience as an Engineer.
- College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours per year for up to three of the required nine years of technical level experience, provided such education includes four courses in drafting, mathematics, electronics, the physical or natural sciences or an area of engineering.
- Vocational/technical training in the physical or natural sciences, drafting, electronics or an area of engineering can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours per year for up to two of the required nine years of technical level experience.
