SIG Special Issue Update
Ms. Schoffman reported that 18 abstracts were received and reviewed, and that the editing team plans to assemble a prospectus and present it to Kevin S. Masters, PhD, in March.
Membership Council Meet & Greet and SIG poster joint event briefing
The event will take place Thursday, April 23, 2015, in conjunction with the 6-7 p.m. poster session. It will likely be held in a room just off the poster hall and that room will include a bar. New members will be given a drink ticket in their registration packets that can be redeemed for a free beer or soda; that ticket can be use only at this event, in an effort to encourage attendance. The Meet & Greet will feature posters on each SIG (with a designated SIG representatives present), and short talks from members about how SBM has benefited their careers (Membership Council will take care of organizing that).
SBM national office will create the posters to be displayed in conjunction with the Membership Council Meet & Greet happening during the poster session on Thursday, April 23, 2015, from 6 - 7 p.m. Information from each SIG’s webpage with be used for the posters and SIG Chairs were invited to submit additional items they want included on the posters.
Action Items:
1. SIG Chairs will designate a member of their SIG to attend the event to represent it.
2. SBM National staff will create the posters using information from each SIG’s website.
Update on Erica/Amy’s search of previous SIG activity
Erica Linc reported that the preliminary review of activities is complete and asked for additional measures the SIG chairs believe should be taken into consideration. Dr. Salsman asked that the size of a SIG be taken into consideration when measuring activity. Dr. Ahern advised that some of the contributions of different SIGs were more nuanced and difficult to quantify (e.g., the Technology SIG’s role in the creation and support of the Digital Health Council).
SBM staff also solicited ideas on how the national office might better serve and support the SIGs so that they are better able to meet their goals. Suggestions included:
· Additional staff professional expertise.
· Changing the practice of SIGs being required to pay to advertise job opportunities in the Weekly SIG Digest as it makes the SIGs less effective in making SBM members aware of jobs in their field.
· Make improvements to the abstract submission system.
SIG Annual Reports
This year the annual report templates were modified so that information that SBM staff could collect was not asked of the SIG chairs (i.e., membership numbers, activities at the SBM Annual meeting, listserv activity).
Action Item: Return completed annual reports to the SBM national office by March 18, 2015.
Next meeting:
Date: Thursday, April 23, 2015
