LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY MBA PROGRAM
SEMINAR: Emerging Capital markets
The seminar will be an intense dialogue with a small number of highly motivated students discussing the many reasons why the capitalist experiment in most developing countries is experiencing severe problems. Some of the dynamics are, of course, economic. But we also need to look at the ethnic, historical, philosophical and religious factors that drive the body politic in so many countries whose development over the last 4 years has experienced dramatic economic and political upheaval, devalued currencies and, in some cases, violent uprisings. The role of the World Bank, IMF and oil are important themes in the course. These setbacks have negatively affected hundreds of millions of people in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe and have led to isolated hotbeds of instability and terrorism. Guest speakers included.
Grade: 30% midterm; 40% class participation; 30% final (essay). The Mid-term will be 1 ½ hours and will be essay based upon the reading.
