Poetry Portfolio Project

Assignment: Your assignment is to write a collection of six original poems that adhere to the task requirements listed below. There are ten tasks listed, you only need to complete six.

This will help you master the terms and techniques of poetry, as well as prepare you for the final assessment.

Tasks:

  1. Write a poem or a prose poem modeled after “A Storm in the Mountains” (p. 459). The prose poem should describe an experience involving or describing nature, and should appeal to several different senses in its imager.
  1. Write atraditional poem modeled after Pat Mora’s “Same Song” (p. 462). The poem should consist of two stanzas that each includes vivid imagery and that contrasts with the other stanza.
  1. Write a lyric poem that expresses a feeling or thought modeled after “Eating Together” (p. 466) and “Grape Sherbet” (p. 468).
  1. Write a narrative poem that tells a story of a moment in time or in history such as in “O Captain! My Captain!” (hand out).
  1. Write a lyric poem that consists of one or more similes and one or more metaphors as in “since feeling is first” (p. 485).
  1. Write a Shakespearean sonnet that is similar to “Shall I compare thee to a Summer’s Day” (p. 494). Your love sonnet should consist of 3 quatrains and one rhyming couplet. The rhyme scheme of each stanza should be “a b a b,” and you should try to make each line 10 beats long.
  1. Write an ode to an object you see everyday like “Ode to my Socks” (p. 498). Start by observing the object closely and making some notes about how it looks, what it resembles, and how it makes you feel.
  1. Write a ballad that tells you a story like “Bonny Barbara Allen” (p.510). This story can be about your life, a fictitious person’s life, a moment in history, or an event from the news today. Remember, your ballad should have a regular rhythm and rhyme, and a refrain.
  1. Write an alliteration poem that imitates the style of “We Real Cool” (p. 532). This poem should be about teenagers today and should include alliteration.
  1. Write a poem of your choice.

 Be sure to include a title, and task number at the top of each included poem in your portfolio!
