God’s Blessing to Christine Smay!

Fr. Bo’s comment: Our beloved Christine has a desire to expand more responsibility outside this office to be at home. In the four brief years since my arrival at St. Michael Parish, my first experience with its people when I called to introduce myself as your new pastor was Chris who answered the phone. I remember telling her that, with a name like Christine, she must be very special since she has “Christ” in her name. She was and is indeed “special” but her desire to do other things will be fulfilled by giving up the task of bookkeeper. We will miss her, although we know she will always be with us if needed. However, since no one can take her place, we do have a successor who can fill the work of bookkeeper, Kathy Kalicky. Kathy was with me for 91/2 years as secretary and bookkeeper at the parishes of St. Agnes in Cassandra and St. Bartholomew in Wilmore. We say God’s blessing to Chris and welcome Kathy to our family home.

God Love You,

Fr. Bo

Worse Punishment?
An Air Force cargo plane was preparing for departure from Thule Air Base in Greenland. They were waiting for the truck to arrive to pump out the aircraft's sewage holding tank.
The Aircraft Commander was in a hurry, the truck was late in arriving, and the Airman performing the job was extremely slow in getting the tank pumped out.
When the commander berated the Airman for his slowness and promised punishment, the Airman responded: "Sir, I have no stripes, it is 20 below zero, I'm stationed in Greenland, and I am pumping sewage out of airplanes. Just what are you going to do to punish me?" Having

I recently obtained a job as Catholic Chaplain at SCI-Laurel Highlands prison, with hours at SCI-Somerset as well. When I started at SCI-Somerset, I noticed they had no tabernacle to reserve the Blessed Sacrament. I approached Father Bodziak and informed him of this issue, and he generously offered to donate the spare tabernacle in the St. Paul room.

When I took the tabernacle to the prison, the inmates were very joyful and grateful. In fact, one of the inmates, John Lohr, sent a very nice letter to Father Bo, thanking him for the tabernacle. Here is the letter Mr. Lohr sent:

Dear Father Bodziak,

I wish to thank you and the people of St. Michael’s Parish for the gift of the much needed tabernacle.

There are not many reasons to experience joy or jubilation here. When I walked into our “church” on Sunday afternoon and saw “our” tabernacle, I felt like a child at Christmas. The sense of joy was overwhelming. To be able to genuflect in the presence of our Lord! It was truly astounding.

Again, my heartfelt gratitude to you and St. Michael Parish.

May the peace of our Lord be with you!

John M. Lohr.

I think sometimes we as Catholics take some things for granted, such as having a tabernacle. But in prison, the Catholic men must deal with being deprived of many things, especially pertaining to their faith. The look of joy and gratitude in those inmates’ faces, many of whom are serving life sentences, really ‘made my day’. Anything we can do for them to give them meaning and hope is well worth the effort.

With grateful thanks to Father Bodziak,

Deacon Dave Hornick

But joy endures in spite of circumstances.”

In thy presence is fullness of joy;

A Soldier's Prayer

Almighty Father, Whose Command is over all and Whose Love never failed,

let me be aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will.

Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty

in purpose and in deed, and helping me so to soldier and to live

so as to stand unashamed and unafraid before my fellow soldiers,

my loved ones, and Thee.

Protect those in whose love I live.

Give me the will to do the work of a man and to accept my share

of responsibilities with a strong heart and a cheerful mind.

Make me considerate of those entrusted to my leadership

and faithful to the duties my country has entrusted to me.

Let my uniform remind me daily of the traditions

of the Service of which I am a part.

If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith;

if I am tempted, make me strong to resist;

if I should miss the mark, bestow upon me courage to try again.

Guide me with the light of Thy truth ~ and keep before me the life of

Him in Whose example and deliverance I trust.

In the name of my Lord,

Amen.

~ Authored by an unknown World War II U.S. Navy Serviceman

Tuesday, November 11th is Veteran’s Day. The observance began in 1921 when the Unknown Soldier from World War I was laid to rest in Arlington Cemetery. Originally called Armistice Day, the November 11th observance marked the anniversary of the end of WWI. Yet after World War II erupted, the name was changed to Veteran’s Day and the tribute was extended to all who served in America’s wars.
