Guidelines for Principals
Breakfast and lunch must still be served on half-days
- Breakfast must be over by 10am
- No Breakfast in the Classroom on late start days
- Lunch must be over by 2pm
- Must have at least 2 hours between breakfast and lunch
- Must have at least 2 hours between lunch and after school snacks
- Cannot send students home with a sack lunch instead of serving students in the cafeteria
Cafeteria staff hours are 6am – 2:30pm and workers will still work those hours on half-days and as hourly workers, will not get paid on days there is no school
Consider that for some students their only meals are the ones they get from school. When school is closed, students cannot come to school just for meals
Free & reduced lunch applications available in August / Contract is 187 days – cannot exceed this number
On half-days, teachers must still have a 30 minute duty free lunch and a 45 minute conference
Any change to employee start date can trigger changes to multiple employee calendars – payroll will need a calendar for every category of payroll for each campus that has a different start date
- Also will impact 45 day penalty free resignation day with potentially multiple grace periods across the district
- Could impact New Teacher Induction
- Impacts evaluation calendars
Think about offering flex time with built in days off or scheduled PD days instead of adjusting work calendars
Hourly employees will be impacted by any change in calendar
Transportation / Professional Development
Any changes to school start/end time will impact transportation and have a cost
Students with special needs can be impacted by changes to their routine/schedule and must be released to an adult / Use three day PD waiver to get more embedded professional development time for elementary schools
No impact on finance since the waiver substitutes instructional time
Possible to repurpose current elementary school parent/teacher conference days – move to half day conference and half day PD
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
Need to communicate and collaborate with all district divisions – TLC, Finance, HR, Transportation, Food Services
Construction management and transportation need to be included at each step in decision-making process
Any time the building is open or closed, there are financial implications
