SUBJECT: CODE BLUE (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Code)
PURPOSE: To provide immediate and appropriate medical response to
patients with cardiac/respiratory arrest.
POLICY:Code Blue is a system by which staff can provide life-saving treatment to patient in cardiac/respiratory arrest.

CODE BLUE PROCEDURE:
I.Code Blue- Basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) consists of the following ABC sequence: Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. The resuscitation process consists of maintaining an open airway, providing artificial ventilation by means of rescue breathing and providing artificial circulation by external cardiac compression.
The American Heart Association ACLS/PALS guidelines are the accepted protocol used to treat potentially lethal cardiac arrhythmias or cardiac/respiratory arrest. ACLS and PALS guidelines are followed and implemented by an ACLS/PALS trained personnel.
2.Location and response of crash carts
1st Floor / Urgent Care / Responds to all first floor codes including the front lobby, registration, pharmacy, lab, waiting areas, clinical pods 1-E and 1-W, adult and pediatric dental patients, supply and delivery area, and parking lots.2nd Floor / Treatment Room / Responds to all second floor codes including clinical pods 2-E and 2-W, 2-South, Administration, kitchen, conference rooms, and stairwells.
3.Crash carts: restocking of
All crash carts are reviewed monthly by nursing and supplies and medications are reordered and restocked as needed. Expiration dates are reviewed monthly.
Following a code situation, the appropriate nurse will review and restock the crash cart.
4.Differentiation of Code Blues
Two types of Code Blue situations:
a)Code blue (adult situations)
b)Pediatric code blue (age 8 and under)
The code will be announced three (3) times overhead

or
"Pediatric Code Blue in …………….."

5.Calling Code Blue
Employee recognizing the need for emergency assistance for an unresponsive or unconscious patient will call for help. Trained personnel will follow basic life support protocol.
Responders include physicians, mid-level providers, RN's, and clinical managers.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF ADULT CODE
1ST Responder / -Calls for help; begin CPR2nd Responder / -Announce Code overhead 3 times including the location
-Call 911
Greeter / -Wait at the front door for the ambulance and direct the
Paramedics to the proper location
Triage Nurse / -Get the crash cart
-Take the cart to the location of the Code
Adult Referral Aide / -Get EKG machine and take it to the location of the Code
1st Physician Responder / -Get report from 1st Responder and take charge of the
Code
1st RN Responder / -Assess situation and determine action
2nd RN Responder / -Assist as needed
Nurse Manager / -Maintain crowd control
-Dismiss unneeded staff
-Call 911 or assign someone to call as needed
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF PEDIATRIC CODE BLUE
Pediatric staff will respond to the scene of ALL pediatric Code Blues!!!!!
Pediatrician / -Take charge of CodePediatric Triage Nurse / -Assists pediatrician as directed
Pediatric RN / -Assist as needed
Management / -Assist with crowd control/family control
Lab / -Standby to draw blood as directed
6.Documentation of Codes
1)All codes will be documented on an incident report and in the patient’s EMR.
2)All IV solutions and medications will be documented in patient’s EMR.
3)EKG strips will be scanned into patient’s EMR.
