2017Case Study Investigation (CSI) Program

Call for Faculty Expressions of Interest

Due November 11, 2016

The Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) is now accepting applications for the 2017Case Study Investigation (CSI) program. CSI is a unique research collaboration that matches LAF-funded student-faculty research teams with leading practitioners to document the benefits of exemplary high-performing landscape projects. Teams develop methods to quantify environmental, economic and social benefits and produce three (3) Case Study Briefs for LAF’s Landscape Performance Series.

CSI research teams are led by Research Fellows, select faculty members with demonstrated interest or expertise in landscape performance. Fellows manage the partnerships with firms and provide the knowledge base for preparing case studies, the expertise in quantifying landscape benefits, and the academic rigor needed to support designers, policy-makers, and advocates who are making the case for sustainable landscape solutions.

The 2017 CSI Program will run February 1 – August 4, 2017.Teams selected for participation will be announced by January 2017. Research Fellows are selected through a two-part application process:

Expression of Interest due November 11, 2016

Full Applications due December 2, 2016

Depending on the volume of applications received, LAF may also conduct phone interviews in December 2016. Application forms and additional information can be found on the LAF website:

LAF provides funding to the Research Team, with the faculty Fellow receiving honorarium of $1,000, the student Research Assistant receiving $6,000 to work on the CSI Program under the Fellow’s direction, and the University receiving up to 12% ($840) in Facilities and Administrations costs.
Research Assistants are graduate students who have exceptional critical thinking, project management, communication, and quantitative skills, and are able to commit to the required work hours for the program’s full duration (February to August). Research Fellows may apply to work with one or more specific firms to document specified projects, or may be matched with applying design firms based on geographic proximity, common interests, and relevant expertise. If applying in cooperation with a firm, indicate this in the appropriate area of the Expression of Interest. The corresponding firm must submit a CSI Project Proposal form for each project by November 18, 2016. Acceptance into the CSI program is not dependent on the Fellow’s ability to provide projects.

Completed Expressions of Interest should be e-mailed toLinda Ashby, CSI Program Manager, y November 11. Contact Lindavia e-mail with questions.

The CSI program is highly collaborative with the goal of better integrating the innovative work being done by academia and practice to advance our knowledge of landscape performance. By investing in this research, LAF hopes that CSI can be a key impetus in moving the landscape architecture profession toward designing every project with specific performance objectives, routinely collecting performance data, documenting the value of sustainable landscape solutions and integrating landscape performance in design education.

The Landscape Architecture Foundation defines landscape performance as the measure of efficiency with which landscape solutions fulfill their intended purpose and contribute toward achieving sustainability. LAF’s Landscape Performance Series Case Study Briefs use quantified environmental, social and economic benefits to show the value of high-performing built projects.

Please read through all questions before answering to minimize overlap in responses.

1. What is your area of expertise within the discipline of landscape architecture, and how might it relate to landscape performance (e.g. public health, climate adaptation, crime prevention, economic indicators, etc.)?

2. Describe your experience/interest related to quantifying environmental, social and/or economic benefits of landscape.

3. How would participation in the CSI program advance your research and/or interests?

4. Why do you think measuring and communicating performance is important to the field of landscape architecture?

5. Each academic research team will study and create case studies of three discrete projects. If you plan to partner with one or more specific design firms to document one or more specific projects, please provide details, including a justification for why you are interested in collaborating with the firm(s) and studying the respective project(s). Note that the corresponding firm must submit a CSI Project Proposal for each project by November 18, 2016.

If one or more of these projects is not selected for participation in 2017,

I am still interested in being considered, and LAF may assign me an alternate project(s).

I am not interested in participating in 2017 CSI.
