Introduction:

The U.S.-Pakistan Partnership for Agricultural Market Development (AMD) is a USAID funded, four year project which aims to improve the ability of Pakistan’s commercial agriculture and livestock sectors to compete in international and national markets in the four target product lines; meat, high value and off season vegetables, mangoes and citrus. AMD will act as a catalyst for development and investment in target product lines by actively promoting cooperation and coordination amongst the value chain actors and ancillary service providers.AMD’s implementation strategy is underpinned by a strictly commercial and market driven approach with a clear focus on strengthening market access for its partner organizations, and support marketing and sales efforts, both nationally and internationally. The objective of the AMD project is to encourage investments in the four target product lines through matching grants and empower stakeholders by developing synergies among them to accomplish together what they cannot do alone. AMD will support upgrading, streamline supply chains, optimize profit margins, increase participation of women entrepreneurs, and ultimately help make Pakistani meat, high value and off season vegetables, mangoes and citrus more profitable and more competitive.

In line with the overarching goal of AMD and the marketing strategy developed, participation in trade shows and other marketing events is a key element of the Project’s international marketing strategy. AMD will work towards facilitating participation of partner businesses at leading trade exhibitions and marketing events. The Project’s support will include targeted technical assistance for preparatory work prior to each show, facilitation for B2B interactions at the event itself and subsequent support for follow-up upon conclusion of the same.

Background:

In order to enhance sales and promote exports of target product lines, AMD will focus on facilitating agribusinesses for participation in leading trade fairs and exhibitions across the world. These events have the potential to be one of the most effective platforms for marketing and promotion for businesses and provide an ideal opportunity to network with various buyers, sellers and other players from the allied industry, resulting in the development of lasting business relationships and sustainable exports through adequate buyer follow-up.

Gulfood, in recent years, has emerged as a leading international event for the agriculture produce industry. The event is held annually in Dubai and attracted more than 4800 exhibitors and 85000 trade visitors from more than 170 countries in its last addition. The trade fair is viewed as the ideal venue to establish and build personal trust and strategic business partnerships, a prerequisite when dealing successfully in perishable products such as fresh fruit, vegetables and meat.

The Program:

The project will acquire a dedicated booth at the trade show and will utilize the space as a trade facilitation counter, adequately resourced to direct visitors to relevant exporting businesses while actively scheduling and managing appointments with prospective buyers at the event.

AMD will bear all costs relating to: fabrication, design and printing of promotional material for the allocated booth. AMD will also bear the cost of lodging, local transportation where needed (excluding international airfare) for up to ten (10) agribusiness/exporters related to the meat and High Value and Off Season Vegetables product lines (Green Chilies, Bitter Gourd, Squashes, Okra, Cucumber, Leafy Vegetables, Spring Onions, Broccoli, Green Peas, French Beans, Luffa, Tomatoes, Carrots, Colocasia, Bitter Criss).

The selected companies will be responsible for: their marketing material, international airfare to Dubai and daily expenses.

The companies assisted by AMD will be required to add USAID branding to their marketing material in order to promote USAID AMDs efforts for the livestock and horticulture industry. The assisted companies will also be provided with branding and marketing support for the expo by AMD in addition to pre-event facilitation in scheduling key meetings and gathering of market intelligence.

In addition to the AMD booth acting as a trade facilitation counter, AMDs booth will also act as an information kiosk, representing the overall industry and product lines with generic branding and product display. The booth will be utilized to disseminate sector and product information and for booking appointments with individual partner businesses at a separate location on the expo center premises.

Provision of a dedicated investment and trade meeting room with trained facilitators, will be provided for at the expo center. The meeting room is envisioned to be an area where multiple suppliers from Pakistan will be able to hold multiple meetings at one time with perspective buyers. This facility will be accessible to all Pakistani exhibiting firms (relating to the target product lines).

USAID AMD will organize a branding dinner which will serve as a meeting/ B2B linkage development space where exporters assisted by AMD can meet with major buyers through the program’s facilitation. To organize the dinner, AMD will engage a vendor based in Dubai and will promote the dinner at Gulf Food through its assisted companies and the trade/ information facilitation space/ booth established by the program.

Expected Outcomes

Participation at Gulf Food will facilitate the establishment of new market links through b2b networking at the event. Strategic sales leads are expected to result in new export orders and an overall increase in export sales for all product lines including meat and HV/OSV. The event will also serve as platform for promoting quality Pakistani meat in the regional market and will enable the branding and repositioning of improved quality high value meat cuts for more rewarding market segments.
