MEMBERSHIP & TRAINING APPLICATION

The Sex Offender Treatment Services Collaborative-Intellectual Disability (SOTSEC-ID) is a collaborative group of professionals engaged in providing treatment for young people and adults with an intellectual disability who are at risk of sexual offending.

The Collaborative provides:

1.  Access to the SOTSEC website which hosts online forums and discussions where clinicians who are engaged in treating this client group can reach a professional network to discuss treatment issues, share resources and address ethical issues which this type of work raises.

2.  Appropriate training and dissemination of cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT), risk assessment and management approaches for this client group. This aim is achieved by arranging periodic seminars, training days and conferences.

3.  Facilitation of the provision of evidence-based psychological treatment for young people and adults with intellectual disability who are at risk of offending or involvement with the criminal justice system through research, dissemination, supervision and support.

Membership of the Collaborative:

Membership is provided alongside attendance at the SOTSEC two-day facilitator basic training and is for those individuals participating in SOTSEC-ID research or treatment, with young people or adults with intellectual disability at risk of offending or involvement with the criminal justice system. Membership only needs to be purchased once (with the training) and the benefits include:

v  Further SOTSEC training events are available at a reduced rate e.g. START and ARMIDILO-S.

v  Access to ‘members only’ section of the SOTSEC-ID website which includes:

Ø  Chat forums and group discussions

Ø  Online professional network

Ø  Online resources referred to in the training

SOTSEC Facilitator Training:

The two day facilitator training is intended for training lead and co-facilitators. The lead facilitator should ideally have a background in clinical psychology or be a CBT trained therapist. The co-facilitators can be LD social workers, probation officers, community LD nurses or LD psychology assistants. The training covers the following modules:

·  CBT for men with learning disabilities at risk of sexual offending: previous groups and the role of SOTSEC-ID

·  Therapeutic climate and getting started

·  Sex education

·  Victim empathy

·  Cognitive approaches

·  The four stage model of sexual offending

·  Relapse prevention

·  Assessment measures and evaluation of group outcome
