RECOMMENDATION
That the Board of Trustees of the Austin Independent School District recognizes Burnet Middle School students, Helen Mikolaichik, Catherine Ntube, Anjali Patel and Richard Maldonado, for their academic achievement as national winners on the 2003 National Spanish Examination.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Four Austin Independent School District middle school students have scored highly enough on the 2003 National Spanish Examination (NSE) to be listed as “National Winners” by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), the sponsor of the contest.
The National Spanish Examination is a proficiency-based test of reading comprehension and listening comprehension designed for junior and senior high school students of Spanish. The NSE is the most widely used test of Spanish in the United States. In 2002, over 96,500 students took the NSE. No other public or private middle school in the Austin chapter of the AATSP had any national winners. Burnet Middle School had more national winners than all non-Austin ISD public and private high schools in our local chapter combined.
The students are Helen Mikolaichik, Catherine Ntube, Anjali Patel and Richard Maldonado from Burnet Middle School. Their proud teacher is Mauro Molina.

It is my pleasure to recognize these four Austin Independent School
District middle school students for being named “National Winners” on
the National Spanish Examination. The National Spanish
examination is a proficiency-based test of reading comprehension
and listening comprehension designed for junior and senior high
school students of Spanish. The NSE is the most widely used test
of Spanish in the United States. In 2002, over 96,500 students took

greater Austin area had any national winners on the National
Spanish Examination. It is with great pride that the Board of
Trustees of the Austin Independent School District commends and
congratulates these outstanding students and their proud teacher,
Mauro Molina, for their remarkable achievement.
