[Course Objective]

This course will cover the correct pronunciation, enunciation, and phonetic transcription of the Italian language for the purpose of expressive singing of repertoire in that language.

[Texts]

Italian Lyric Diction Workbook, 3rd Edition by Cheri Montgomery. This is a required text.Students will not be allowed to take the first quiz on January 29 or 30 if they have not purchased the book by that date and they will receive a grade of zero for that quiz.

Bantam New College Italian/English Dictionary. This is a required text.

[Grading and Attendance]

Four quizzes cumulative: 40% of the final grade.

One spoken and one sung presentation in class: 20% of the final grade. (Not memorized and selected in conjunction with you and your teacher)

One comprehensive final written exam: 40% of the final grade.

Class participation and preparedness.

Satisfactory attendance. Please limit absences to two. Absences exceeding two will be considered unexcused unless a valid, documented reason is given. Grades will be lowered by half a letter grade for each unexcused absence. Please communicate with the instructor if there is a problem concerning attendance.

[Class Expectations]

1. No food or drink except bottled water please.

2. Arrive on time. Do not leave during class, unless there is an emergency.

3. It will be necessary for the entire class to provide board work, discuss rules and work enunciation, both by speaking and singing.

4. No cellular phone use during class. All phones must be turned to silent and stored away during class time.

Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (Undergraduates)

A student must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) to continue to receive financial aid. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA in addition to successfully completing a required number of credit hours based on total registered hours per term. Students cannot exceed attempted credit hours above 150% of their required degree plan. If a student does not maintain the required standards, the student may lose their financial aid eligibility.

Academic Integrity

Student Behavior in the Classroom

Student behavior that interferes with an instructor’s ability to conduct a class or other students’ opportunity to learn is unacceptable and disruptive and will not be tolerated in any instructional forum at UNT.
