Project Description

Your description should be written for an informed non-expert audience and no more than three (3) sides (or 4 sides if supporting an Honours or PhD student) of A4 using font size 12 (excluding this application form) will be considered in the assessment process.

Please use the following headings to detail your proposal

Project Description, Aim and Background

  • Describe the rationale for the project: why the proposal, why is the project necessary, what challenge does your project address?
  • What is the key ambition/outcome for your project?
  • Describe the objectives for your project. Your objectives must be clear, achievable and directly verifiable
  • Discuss the background for the project and how this is directly relevant to the project’s objectives/research questions. Provide enough background information so the Panel appreciates what you are proposing. Include relevant information about recent international progress in the field of the research, and the relationship of this proposal to work in the field generally. Refer only to refereed papers that are widely available to national and international research communities.

Justification of PhD or Honours Support

  • If applying for Honours or PhD maintenance – indicate if student has started (supply name and student number) or not. If a PhD student indicate how many years you are likely to request funds for on an annual basis.
  • Since on-going maintenance funds for a PhD are not guaranteed through this scheme on an annual basis, outline how you will attempt to find other maintenance funds for the project.
  • If a PhD or Honours student is not available, how will you spend the funds to meet the objectives of your project?

Significance and Innovation

  • Justify how the research is significant and whether the research addresses an important problem.
  • Describe how the anticipated outcomes advance the knowledge base of the discipline and why the project aims and concepts are novel and innovative.
  • What contributions will the project make to the research field(s).
  • Discuss what is new here? The idea, the methodology, the analysis, the expected outcomes or any or all of these? What does this innovation mean for the research field and relation to the project?
  • Briefly discuss your project with respect to its potential benefits (e.g. social, environmental, economic and cultural).

Approach and Methodology

  • Describe your approach to achieving your stated objectives. What is your chosen methodology and analysis and why is it the most appropriate approach to achieve your objectives.
  • Detail your methodology and tasks to achieving your objectives - the conceptual framework, design and methods and demonstrate that these are adequately developed, well integrated and appropriate to the aims of the project.
