GOVERNING BOARD MEETING
OREGON DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY & MINERAL INDUSTRIES
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2003
TELECONFERENCE MEETING
PORTLAND STATE OFFICE BUILDING, room 965
PORTLAND, OREGON
( 1) Call to Order and (2) Introduction of Governing Board
Chair Vera Simonton called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. She introduced Board members Don Haagensen, Don Christensen, Bill Elliott and Barbara Seymour.
Present in the audience were:
Portland DOGAMI staff Vicki McConnell, Lu Clark, Charles Kirby, Kate Halstead, and via teleconference, Gary Lynch and Dawn Marshall from the Albany office.
( 3) Update of State Geologist Recruitment (Board)
The Board discussed the recruitment process and decided that the two candidates that resulted from the process would not be offered the position as department director. Chair Simonton then stated: We have ended the open competitive selection process that we began in June. More than 30 candidates applied. We conducted two rounds of paper screening of those applications, and two rounds of interviews. Although the candidates met the minimum qualifications, none of them possessed the combination of skills, experience, and desired attributes that we were seeking. After careful evaluation of all factors, we have decided not to extend an offer to any of those candidates. State law requires the State Geologist to be appointed by the Governing Board in consultation with the Governor. We have been in contact with the Governor's office throughout this process and we are discussing the next possible steps with them. We will keep you apprised as information becomes available. Right now there is nothing further to share.
( 4) Setting of time and place of next Governing Board meeting (Board). The next Board meeting will be held Monday, January 12, 2004, as a teleconference meeting, beginning at 9 am.
( 5) Additional public comment. There was no public comment.
( 6) Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 am.
