WAB is…
Warwickshire Association for the Blind, a registered charity located at Charles Court in Warwick. Our aim is to provide practical help, advice and support to visually impaired people living in Warwickshire.
When someone has been certified as being blind or partially sighted a Consultant Ophthalmologist will notify WAB for registration purposes. WAB will then arrange for a Rehabilitation Worker to visit who can offer help and start to build up a network of support tailored to meet individual needs.
Daily Living Skills
With reduced vision, a person may need to “re-learn” their living area, workplace and surroundings. Rehabilitation Officers from WAB can provide training in mobility, kitchen and daily living skills and offer other kinds of practical help. Rehabilitation Officers can give advice about, and order, special equipment, available at a discount price to people who are registered as either blind or partially sighted. In certain circumstances equipment can be provided on permanent loan.
Useful Equipment
There are many different types of specially designed equipment that can make every-day life easier for someone with limited or no vision. Some of the most popular items are talking clocks and watches, large print playing cards, dominoes and handwriting frames. Further details about equipment can be obtained from WAB at their office in Warwick or one of their Drop-In Centres.
Using your vision to the best advantage
Enhancing your vision by training can be undertaken by staff from WAB. This could be by trying magnifiers in combination with different types of lighting or by providing more in depth guidance to suit individuals’ changing sight.
Advice and Information
If you would like advice or information on any matters relating to sight loss please telephone us. You may wish to discuss problems resulting from your sight loss or get information on services. In cases where specialist knowledge or information is needed, the staff will endeavour to guide you in the appropriate direction.
WAB Clubs
Throughout Warwickshire many local social clubs, sporting groups and classes exist for visually impaired people as well as home visiting and personal reading services which are often run by Volunteers.
New groups may be organised for those with shared interests or hobbies or arrangements can be made for an individual to pursue a new interest. Contact our Community Development Officer at Charles Court, Warwick for more details.
WAB Visitor/Reader Services
This service is offered to Blind or Partially Sighted people who are housebound or who feel isolated.
Toy Library
WAB together with Exhall Grange School provide a library of toys and games available for loan to visually impaired children. Further information is available from WAB.
Supporting WAB
Although WAB receives a grant to provide services on behalf of the Local Authority, it relies extensively on donations and legacies to help it offer the full range of services expected by blind and partially sighted people. Any comments and suggestions are always very welcome.
Enquiries
The team of experienced staff at WAB welcomes enquiries from anyone, whether registered or not, either by telephone or by visit. It is recommended that appointments be made as many staff work from day to day outside the Centre.
