Dear Seventh Grade Families:

As part of the California Next Generation Science Standards for Life Sciences, we will begin the unit that studies human growth and reproduction on Wednesday, February 1, 2017. This studywill include the endocrine system which will mention the reproductive organs in both males and females.Part of this study will examine the growth of a fetus in the womb. I will defer any questions that may arise regarding human sexuality to the parent, but will answer student questions regarding anatomy and vocabulary.

This study will include Lesson 6: The Reproductive System of their Human Bodies Workbook. I encourage you to peruse the unit prior to, or during our study. To culminate the chapter, the class will watch clipsfromthe Discovery Science Education series entitled, “Human Body Systems: The Reproductive System” and will participate in a presentation on Fetal Development presented by the Director of The Parish Respect Life Ministry, Mrs. Alejandra Baker. Your learner will see the development and growth of a one-celled life into a fully developed fetus. The Fetal Development presentation will be given on Wednesday, February 1, and the video will be shown on Thursday, February 2. You are welcome to come and watch the video and/or presentation with us during your child’s scheduled science class.

In addition, this year the Upper School staff has coordinated their presentations of related content across the disciplines. Mr. Jimenez will teach a lesson entitled, “Defending Life” as well as lessons on virtues with a focus on chastity. Likewise, the learners will be writing essays on the topic of “Respect Life” with Ms. Bennett in ELA for the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest. Learners will also be asked to submit drawings centered on the same theme for an art contest being offered to us through The Parish Respect Life Ministry.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Please complete the Permission Form and return it no later than Monday, January 30, 2017.
