Collect for Purity

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known and from you no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria

Collect of the Day

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus, Christ our Savior;, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Younger worshipers, ages 4 – 10,

1st Lesson Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4 seated

This is the message that the Lord revealed to the prophet Habakkuk: O Lord, how long must I call for help before you listen, before you save us from violence? Why do you make me see such trouble? How can you stand to look on such wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are all around me, and there is fighting and quarreling everywhere. The law is weak and useless, and justice is never done. Evil people get the better of the righteous, and so justice is perverted.

I will climb my watchtower and wait to see what the Lord will tell me to say and what answer he will give to my complaint. The Lord gave me this answer: “Write down clearly on tablets what I reveal to you, so that it can be read at a glance. Put it in writing, because it is not yet time for it to come true. But the time is coming quickly, and what I show you will come true. It may seem slow in coming, but wait for it; it will certainly take place, and it will not be delayed. And this is the message: ‘Those who are evil will not survive, but those who are righteous will live because they are faithful to God.’”

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

Thanks be to God.

Gradual Psalm 37:1-10

Do not fret yourself because of evildoers;

do not be jealous of those who do wrong.

For they shall soon wither like the grass,

and like the green grass fade away.

Put your trust in God and do good;

dwell in the land and feed on its riches.

Take delight in God,

who shall give you your heart's de-sire.

Commit your way to God and put your trust in God,

who will bring it to pass.

God will make your righteousness as clear as the light

and your just dealing as the noonday.

Be still before God;

for God wait patiently.

Do not fret yourself over the one who prospers,

the one who succeeds in evil schemes.

Refrain from anger, leave rage alone;

do not fret yourself; it leads only to evil.

For evildoers shall be cut off,

but those who wait upon God shall possess the land.

2nd Lesson 2 Timothy 1:1-14

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I am grateful to God—whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did—when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you.

For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

Thanks be to God.

Gospel Luke 17:5-10

The Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to Luke.

Glory to you Lord Christ.

The apostles said to the Lord, “Make our faith greater.”

The Lord answered, “If you had faith as big as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Pull yourself up by the roots and plant yourself in the sea!’ and it would obey you.

“Suppose one of you has a servant who is plowing or looking after the sheep. When he comes in from the field, do you tell him to hurry along and eat his meal? Of course not! Instead, you say to him, ‘Get my supper ready, then put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may have your meal.’

The servant does not deserve thanks for obeying orders, does he?

“It is the same with you; when you have done all you have been told to do, say, ‘We are ordinary servants; we have only done our duty.’”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you Lord Christ.

Prayers of the People standing or kneeling

Let us pray for the whole human family and for the world of which we are a part, saying: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

O God, you are unresting in movement, serene in the stillness, inspiring zeal while counseling patience, calling us from paths that lead to ease and indifference. That washed anew each day by our baptism, we wait for your coming, not hardening our hearts nor forsaking our faith, tub vowing dedication in mind and in will and lifting hearts and hands in holy obedience to your will: Lord, in your mercy…

That leaders of all segments of society, government and military, business and industry, all popular and social endeavor, will reject impotent rhetoric and will speak the truth for the honest edification of the kingdom among us: Lord, in your mercy…

That we together with those in our families and in our communities, those who suffer from illness and disease, loneliness and despair, and those we name silently before you, may bask in the warmth and joy and love of the Spirit: Lord, in your mercy…

That those we criticize and scorn will become our brothers and sisters, and that we make the first step toward reconciliation: Lord, in your mercy…

Here other intercessions may be offered.

That the memory of our loved ones and of all the saints will keep us steadily on the path to which you point us: Lord, in your mercy…

Hear these words, O Lord, as you hear and understand the unspoken thoughts of our hearts and minds, and grant their fulfillment through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Offertory Anthem Thee We Adore - plainchant (adapt)

Thee we adore, o hidden Savior,
Thee who in thy Sacrament art pleased to be:
Both flesh and spirit in thy Presence fail,
Yet here thy Presence we devoutly hail.
O blest memorial of our dying Lord,
Who living bread to men doth here afford:
O may our souls forever feed on thee
and thou, o Christ, forever precious be.
Source of all goodness, Jesu Lord and God,
Cleanse us, unclean, with thy most saving Blood;
Increase our faith and love that we may know
the hope and grace which from thy presence flow.
O Christ, whom now beneath a veil we see,
May what we thirst for soon our portion be:
To gaze on thee unveiled, and see thy face,
the vision of thy glory and thy grace.

Eucharistic Prayer

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and every-where to give thanks to you, God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth....

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

standing or kneeling

Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen
