Math Placement Tests

Academic Placement Testing Program

The Academic Placement Testing Program (APTP) coordinates and administers the Mathematics Placement Tests (MPT) developed by math faculty from Washington state post-secondary institutions. The program is governed by a committee comprised of faculty and testing staff from participating institutions. The MPT can be taken in late Spring at Statewide testing sessions, or at the following institutions throughout the year:

Central Washington University
Eastern Washington University
Spokane Falls Community College / University of Washington
Washington State University
Western Washington University

Testing Requirements

The Mathematics Placement Test is required for most students who are planning to enroll in first-year mathematics courses at the state’s public universities and some community colleges. Results of the MPT help students and university advisors select mathematics courses for which students are best prepared. The General Math Placement Test (MPT-G) can also be used to demonstrate college readiness. Eleventh grade students who achieve a score above the college readiness cutoff, and who subsequently enroll in 12th-grade math, will not be required to take remedial math when they enter college.

Placement Decisions

Each institution sets its own requirements for taking the MPT and placement cutoffs. Questions regarding course placement or exemption from testing should be directed to the mathematics department of the institution the student plans to attend (see Institutional Contacts on last page of this brochure).

About the Tests

Three versions of the test enable accurate placement of students with varying levels of academic preparation. Specific placement cutoffs reflect the content and difficulty level of each course. Students should choose among the tests based on the course in which they wish to enroll, their level of academic preparation, and the requirements of their institution.

·  The General Math Placement Test (MPT-G) is directed toward students who have less than three or four years of high school math and who will be entering pre-calculus or general college-level math classes. Test content is aligned with the Washington State College Readiness Mathematics Standards, and a single college readiness cutoff (raw score=17) is accepted at all Washington public post-secondary institutions. Eleventh grade students who achieve a score above the college readiness cutoff, and who subsequently enroll in 12th-grade math, will not be required to take remedial math when they enter college.

·  The Intermediate Math Placement Test (MPT-I) is of a similar level of difficulty as the MPT-G. It is directed toward students who have less than three or four years of high school math and who will be entering pre-calculus or general college-level math classes. The test covers Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Pre-Calculus I.

·  The Advanced Math Placement Test (MPT-A) is directed toward students who have taken at least three or four years of high school math and who wish to enroll in Calculus. It covers Intermediate Algebra and Pre-Calculus I and II.

Sample Problems

A set of sample problems is available to help students to prepare for the MPT. See: www.placement.washington.edu

Registering for the Test

APTP Statewide test administration takes place in May and June each year. Starting in early February, students register online at www.placement.washington.edu for testing sessions throughout the state. Since test dates fill quickly, students are encouraged to register as soon as possible. The test fee is $15.

Institutions charge higher fees for On-Campus testing ($25-$45) and capacity is limited. Contact specific institutions (see last page) for more information.

Students are encouraged to take the MPT during Statewide sessions to avoid delays in registering for classes.
