WSFCS Scholarship Night
October 20th at 7:00pm: There will be a district wide Scholarship Night at the WSFCS Education Center at 4801 Bethania Station Road. Tom Benza, from Wake Forest University, will speak to students and parents about the process of applying for merit and need based scholarships. This is valuable information for any seniors and their parents if you plan to apply for scholarships.
New Scholarships
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity High School Essay Contest
Amount: $500-$3,000
Application: Applicants must write an essay on “The impact of social media on the advancement of social and economic issues in the United States and the world”. The essay must be original and must be between 700 and 750 words in length. Three typed, double-spaced copies of the essay must be submitted.
Deadline: Essays must be submitted to Ms. Snapp by 4pm on Thursday October 20th.
Optimist Club Scholarship
Amount: $500
Criteria: The selected student must actively participate in school and community activities and must demonstrate an optimistic attitude.
Application: One Parkland student will receive this scholarship and will be invited to the Optimist Club Banquet held on November 14th. All students who have interviewed with the Scholarship Committee will be considered. If you have not interviewed but are interested in this scholarship please see Ms. Snapp no later than Thursday October 20th.
NC State University Teaching Scholarships
Amount: varies
Criteria: Applicants must plan to enroll in the College of Education at NC State. Interested students are encouraged to apply to NC State as early as possible because they will be invited to apply for these scholarships based on their admissions application to the college.

Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarships
Amount: varies (there will be 6 local winners of this scholarship that will advance to the next level of competition)
Criteria: Applicants must be in the top 5% of their class (ranked number 14 or above). Leadership is extremely important.
Application: Applications are available in Guidance or online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars
Deadline: Applications are due before December 2nd
Elks Most Valuable Nursing Scholarships
Amount: varies (there will be 3 local winners of this scholarship that will advance to the next level of competition)
Criteria: Applicants must be in the top 25% of their class (ranked number 70 or above). Must plan to pursue a career in nursing. Scholarship counts for 20% of the application, health care activities count for 30% and financial need counts for 50%.

Senah C. and C. A. Kent Foundation Scholarship
Amount: varies
Criteria: Applicants must demonstrate traits of high personal character, leadership and ambition as well as academic merit and financial need.

NC Central University Winston Salem Alumni Chapter Scholarship
Amount: unknown
Criteria: Applicants must be accepted to enroll at NC Central for the fall. Must have at least a 2.7 GPA. Application: Applications are available in Guidance
Deadline: Applications are must be postmarked by March 1st
Announcements
Brown University will host an Information Session at East Chapel Hill High School on Monday October 24th at 7pm. The program will include an informational presentation and an opportunity for questions and answers. All students interested in Brown are invited to attend.

WSFCS Association of Educational Office Professionals Scholarship
Amount: $500-$1200
Criteria: Two local scholarships are awarded to students based on academics, initiative and financial need
Application: Applications are available from Ms. Snapp.

Coca-Cola Scholars Program
Amount: 250 students will receive a total of approximately $3 million each year
Criteria: Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and community service.

Dean Prim Travel Scholarship to China
Amount : Summer study in China plus $1,500 renewable for four years of college (3 scholarships are given each year)
Criteria: Applicants must be high school juniors or seniors with at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA. Students must attend high school in Forsyth, Davie or Yadkin County.

Ron Brown Scholar Program
Amount: approximately $40,000
Criteria: Applicants must be African-American high school seniors who excel academically, as well as exhibit exemplary leadership and service skills. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.

Deadline: Applications are due November 1st (if you want your application information forwarded to some other scholarship providers) or January 9th (if you want to be considered only for the Ron Brown scholarship)
Thomas Wolfe Scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill
Amount: full scholarship for 4 years
Criteria: applicants must demonstrate exceptional writing ability in prose, poetry or playwriting

General Hugh Shelton Leadership Scholarship to NC State University
Amount: $10,000 per year for 4 years at NC State plus a $2,000 stipend for external leadership experiences
Criteria: strong leadership and community service experience, commitment to "health and wellness", commitment to personal growth, outstanding academic record

Prudential Spirit of the Community Scholarship
Amount: $1,000-$5,000
Criteria: These awards are given to high school students who have demonstrated exemplary community service

P.E.O STAR Scholarship
Amount : $2,500
Criteria: Applicants must be female and must have at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA.

Robertson Scholarship to Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill
Amount: Full tuition, room and board, and fees for 4 years at Duke or UNC-Chapel Hill. Each school normally awards 18 Robertson Scholarships. Students also receive a laptop and funding to study abroad. Robertson Scholars have full privileges at both campuses and actually switch campuses for one semester.
Criteria: Applicants must demonstrate exceptional academic ability and outstandingleadership experience in student or community organizations. They are looking for students who have "done great things and who desire to do even greater things."

Gates Millenium Scholarship
Amount: Various amounts up to full tuition.
Criteria: Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Applicants must be African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American. They must be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident. Applicants must have at least a 3.3 unweighted GPA and show leadership ability through community service or extracurricular activities.
Application: To apply visit www.gmsp.org. This application requires two recommendations (one for academics and one for service and leadership activities)
Deadline: Application deadline is January 11, 2012.
Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship for NCSU, UNC-G or UNC-CH
Amount: approximately $9,500 per year plus summer internships or travel and a computer
Criteria: Applicants must be from one of 14 NC counties (including Forsyth) and must plan to enroll at North Carolina State University, UNC-Greensboro, or UNC-Chapel Hill. Criteria include financial need, merit, leadership and character.

Charlie Adams Endowed Scholarships from NCHSAA
Amount: $1,500
Criteria: Must be a female on a varsity cross-country team or a male on a varsity wrestling team.

Clary Medal from NCHSAA
Amount: $2,000
Criteria: Must participate on 2 or more varsity athletic teams during high school, and must be on an athletic team during their senior year. Must have at least a 3.2 GPA and demonstrate active community involvement

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Scholarships
Amount: $1,000-$2,500
Criteria: Applicants must be Latino students with exceptional community service and leadership potential. Must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident, and must demonstrate financial need
