SITE PRESERVATION & EXCAVATION GRANTS

NEW! JULIE HERZIG DESNICK ENDOWMENT FUND FOR FIELDWORK IN ARCHAEOLOGY

Deadline: November 1

Amount: $5,500

Purpose: Provides grants for survey, defined as the initial reconnaissance of sites and landscapes, to archaeologists, especially those starting new field projects. Archaeologists in the early stages of their careers will receive priority.

Requirements: Applicants must have been AIA members in good standingfor a minimum of two years, and must have a Ph.D. in archaeology or a related field. See AIA website for permit requirements. The AIA will not fund overhead costs.

NEW! KATHLEEN AND DAVID BOOCHEVER ENDOWMENT FUND FOR FIELDWORK AND SCIENTIFIC ANALYSES Deadline: November 1

Amount: $4,000

Purpose: The Boochever Fund supports field and laboratory research and can be used to defray the costs of beginning a new project. The grant will be awarded on a competitive basis and can be used to support activities such as a site or regional survey, exploratory excavations, or innovative laboratory analyses, informed by state-of-the-art technologies.

Requirements: Applicants must have been AIA members in good standing for a minimum of two years, must have a Ph.D. in archaeology or a related field, and are expected to have an academic affiliation.See AIA website for permit requirements. The AIA will not fund overhead costs.

COTSEN EXCAVATION GRANTS

Deadline:November 1

Amount:Twogrants per year of up to $25,000 each. One grant will be awarded toa first time project director launching a new project while the second

will be open to all professionals working in the field.

Purpose:To provide excavation support for professional AIAmembers working around the world.

Requirements: Applicants must have been AIA members in good standingfor a minimum of two years, and must have a Ph.D. in archaeology or a related field. See AIA website for permit requirements.

Restrictions: The AIA will not fund overhead costs. Please note that funds may not be used for survey expenses and equipment, publication, or for salaries for principal investigators, or to purchase land. Potential applicants are invited to consult about what other expenses are allowable before submitting their narratives and budgets.

NEW! RICHARD C. MACDONALD ILIAD ENDOWMENT FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH

Deadline: November 1

Amount: $20,000

Purpose: Provides an annual grant to support scholars working on the site of Ancient Troy; those geographic areas/time periods that give context to current understanding of Ancient Troy; and the study of ancient cultures and civilizations that interacted with the Trojans over the city’s long history.

Requirements: Applicants must have been AIA members in good standingfor a minimum of two years, and must have a Ph.D. in archaeology or a related field. Applicantsmust be the director or the co-director of the excavation.Permit must be obtained before funds are dispersed.The AIA will not fund overhead costs.

NEW! ELLEN AND CHARLES STEINMETZ ENDOWMENT FUND FOR ARCHAEOLOGY

Deadline: November 1

Amount: $5,500

Purpose: The Steinmetz Fund supports innovative uses of technology in archaeological research that includes both fieldwork and laboratory research. Archaeologists initiating a new project are encouraged to apply and archaeologists in the early stages of their careers will have priority (within 8 years of the receipt of their PhD).

Requirements: Applicants must have been AIA members in good standingfor a minimum of two years, and must have a Ph.D. in archaeology or a related field, and are expected to have an academic affiliation. See AIA website for permit requirements. The AIA will not fund overhead costs.

SITE PRESERVATION GRANT

Application Process: Applying for an AIA Site Preservation Grantis a two-step process:

  • Step 1. Submit brief inquiry via the form on the AIA Site Preservationwebsite at any time during the year.If inquiry is accepted, applicants will be provided with a full application.
  • Step 2. Complete and return the full application by the nextdeadline date.

Application Deadline: February 15

Purpose: The Archaeological Institute of America’s Site PreservationGrants are awarded to innovative projects that use outreachand community development alongside direct conservation to sustainablypreserve archaeological sites.
