Routine Deadlines

Weekly Ops Orders: Ops orders and the Ops Plan are completely different. Ops Orders are the weekly orders published that describe the events taking place for the week. It is the job of the C/Ops Group Commander to write them. However the Cadet Wing Commander needs to edit them to the best of his or her abilities before giving them to the CoC for the final signature. Ops Orders were published each Friday and outlined what would be happening in the following week.

Projects/Additional Duties

Ops Plan: The Ops Plan is document published once a semester by the Cadet Wing Commander. It is your response to the Mission Directive, outlining how you are going to accomplish the task set forth in the Mission Directive. Be careful not to write to many specifics on accomplishing task in the MD, doing so will take the creativity and freedom from the Cadets beneath you.

Mission Directive Task: It is easy to get caught up in the day to day task of being the Cadet Wing Commander. One large problem I was faced with was forgetting some task that were outlined in the MD but never mentioned again. Be sure to reference it about once a month to check and see if there are suspenses in the MD you need to work to get accomplished.

UMD: The Unit Manning Document is a once a semester document that list every POC’s rank and position. The best way to describe it is referencing the old UMD. It is important to note that you can set up your UMD to allow for a promotion system if you want. Contact me for more specific details.

Lessons Learned/Comments

1. You are responsible for everything! That being said, try not to take each critique of the Cadet Wing personally. Sometimes, issues occur that are not your fault, this is perfectly fine as long as you then take the steps to fix them.

2. Personally, motivation for the POC was extremely difficult. Work hard to find what motivates them and use it to try to bring up there morale.

3. Communication was a large issue throughout the semester. If you continue to hold Wing Staff meetings, try to find ways to ensure that information is trickling down the chain. A real frustration for me was passing down clear guidelines at a Wing Staff meeting and the information never got down the chain.

4. CHECK EMAIL!!!!!!!!!! I am sure you know by now so much in ROTC is e-mail ran. Also, follow up on your e-mails. Simply forwarding a suspense will never ensure its completion to standards.

5. Dealing with the Cadre can be frustrating. Always remember they are not your friend, they are simply your boss.

6. Do not forget the GMC. Even as the Cadet Wing Commander I made it a point to participate in sports and other MWR events to meet the GMC. Learn there names if you can, it will show them that you care about the people.
