Lesson 1: Investments –Retirement, & college.

This a lesson for more advanced students to discuss the importance of saving for retirement and college. There are several objectives that will incorporate even the beginning student, however the focus on these two lessons is on the intermediate and advanced students.

Objectives:

·  LI – 26: Make or change an appointment by telephone

·  LII – 23: Provide personal information

·  LIII – 1: Listen to a short conversation, then answer questions orally and in writing

·  LIV – 8: Communicate impressions, emotions, likes and dislikes

·  LV – 16: Make an oral presentation of family history

·  LVI – Demonstrate good listening skills through paraphrasing, summarizing, elaboration and clarification of ideas

Vocabulary: OPD page 97

Activities: Set up a fictitious college plan

Show how some retirement funds are set up

Conversation: Discuss ways to invest for your own retirement.

Get ideas for college savings plan and various ways to finance college education for children.


Lesson2: Taxes

Taxes are very difficult to understand and in this lesson we will try to give a short version why we need to pay them. As everyone says, there are two things in life we sure of –death and taxes. No one wants to pay them but that is how our government pays for the many things we need and want in our lives.

Objectives:

·  LI - 18: Recognize and name a minimum of 10 public building and places

·  LII – 23: Provide personal information

·  LIII – 11: Read and understand a pay stub including deductions

·  LIV – 9: Be able to list city and county services

·  LV – 4: Acquire new vocabulary from context

·  LVI – 1: Demonstrate comprehension during a conversation through appropriate responses
