Laptop Order Form Instructions

The Janey Scholars Program will supply one computer and printer to each student during their freshman year. Each student has a budget of $2,000 and is expected to configure a laptop that includes any hardware and software he/she will need. This can include:

  • Laptop
  • Printer
  • Carrying case
  • Microsoft Office
  • Any other accessories necessary

All students must purchase at least a 3-year warranty/service plan.

Process:

Ideally, your computer should be purchased through your school’s bookstore or technology center. Get information from your school about what computers are available and the best way to make the purchase (online or in store).

  • For an Online Purchase:
  • Log onto your school’s website and decide what you would like to purchase.
  • Configure the laptop and save it (and any additional accessories) in an online shopping cart. This requires creating a username and password.
  • Complete the applicable sections of the attached Laptop Order Form and email to your mentor.
  • Once your request has been approved, Sarah will log-in using your username and password and purchase the computer.
  • For an In-Store Purchase:
  • Go to your campus computer retailer (usually the bookstore) and choose the laptop you’d like to purchase (and any additional accessories).
  • Confirm with the store that they will accept American Express payment over the phone. If they allow it, place your laptop on hold, pending payment.
  • Complete applicable sections of the attached Laptop Order Form and email to your mentor. Identify a contact person at the store who can receive the payment over the phone.
  • Once the request has been approved, tell your bookstore that Sarah Young from TPI will be calling to pay for the purchase.

If your school does not have laptops for purchase OR you do not wish to purchase through your school, you can purchase a laptop online (we suggest using Dell.com or Apple.com) and follow the same steps under “For an online purchase”.

Receiving your laptop:

Unless they can be picked up at the campus bookstore, laptops will be shipped via FedEx to a secure address. You must provide both a HOME and SCHOOL address.

  • Include the date you will be arriving at school on the order form so Sarah will know where to send your laptop.
  • Many school addresses will not take FedEx packages, so you MUST call your school to verify the address where you can receive a FedEx package.
  • When possible, laptops may also be picked up at TPI in Boston.
