CUPE Local 1480 Financial Committee Guidelines

The purpose of the Committee is to recommend or not recommend the support of financial assistance to members of the bargaining unit.

The Committee will refer to the following guidelines when making these recommendations.

1) The member will make an application on the appropriate form and submit it to the Committee. If the application is not signed, it will be denied. If it is not completed in detail, it will be denied.

2) The Committee will review all requests for assistance. The Committee will forward the recommendation to approve to the membership for voting purposes.

3) If the application is denied, one of the Committee members will contact the member directly.

4) The member must be off work and without any income.

5) Personal Financial appeals will be eligible for one time only.

6) Once approved by the membership, a cheque will be issued to the member. (CUPE Local 1480 By-Laws indicates a cheque for $250.00 can be issued immediately, the balance of $750.00 will be issued at the next General Membership Meeting, for a total of $1,000.00.)

Further Information:

The Financial Committee is for members, occasionally their immediate family members (spouse or children, living with them), that have experienced unexpected or extraordinary financial burdens. Generally medical or illness issues.

Example:

The member is not working, with no income, waiting on LTD to begin.

The member's child requires medical attention or extraordinary medical care where an additional cost is required.

The Committee is not responsible for:

Members who are working and are asking for assistance with insurance matters, additional family emergencies (indirect family members) or marital breakups.

If the member or their spouse are working, no financial assistance will be granted.

The Personal Appeals for Financial Assistance are never brought to the General Membership for discussion. Details are not revealed.

All applications are unique, and are thoroughly discussed prior to the decision of the Committee.
