Day 1

McPherson USD 418 Lesson Plan Template

Learning Outcome: Welcome to Library-Procedures-How to Move through the library

(before doing this lesson you will want to determine how you want classes to enter the library, sit down, where to sit, and when and how to move to tables)

Background Information: n/a

Date: August/SeptemberSubject/Grade: 1st-3rd

Prerequisite Skills Needed for Learning: N/A

Learning Resources:

Book/Resource / Props / Activity
Boy + Bot / Robot Friend / taped squares

Opening -Prepare the Learner

Attention: How will I get the students’ attention?

Welcome students to the library and introduce yourself. Feel free to talk a few minutes telling students who you are and letting them ask questions.

This is a good time to remind them to raise their hand.

Introduce students to your robot friend. Have them point out different areas of the library to your robot friend and tell him or her what they are for.

Read Robot Book (I’d probably start with Boy + Bot if you have it by this point).

Show students the grids. Now you will move to introduce the ideas in Happy Maps assignment, but for day 1 just try to use one floor grid, near the exit. Have students line up and have students take one step forward, one step backward, etc on your lead. This is how a robot walks because it can only think one step at a time (you know, kind of how it thinks). For 1st grade and maybe even second have some helpers demonstrate before you do this with the whole class.

Get done early?

Robot Move (like Mother, May I?) could also be used with this group. Instructions are in the kindergarten lesson plan.

Closing - Solidify the learning

Day 2

McPherson USD 418 Lesson Plan Template

Learning Outcome:

Date: August/SeptemberSubject/Grade: 1st-3rd

Learning Resources:

Book / Props / Activity
Oh NO! / Robot Friend / Happy Map Handout --1st grade, 2nd grade
Move it, Move it handout--3rd grade
Scissors
Glue

Opening -Prepare the Learner

Attention: How will I get the students’ attention?

Welcome students back to the library. See which students can remind how to move on a grid as just a quick reminder of what they did in library next time. Remind students that they have rules and directions to follow in the library. A robot also follows rules, because it can’t do anything else!

Read Robot Zot, What else do we know about robots?

1st -2nd Show video for Happy Maps and explain assignment. Review procedures for using scissors and glue safely and without waste. Make sure to explain to students where to put items when they are done with them.

3rd grade The worksheet is just a little more challenging. You may want to do practice moving around the library in grids in a different area of the room before doing the worksheet.

Day 3

McPherson USD 418 Lesson Plan Template

Learning Outcome:

Date: August/SeptemberSubject/Grade: 1st-3rd

Learning Resources:

Book / Props / Activity
Robot Zot / code.org site
Course 1 jigsaws

Opening -Prepare the Learner

Attention: How will I get the students’ attention?

Using Robot Friend have students move him from one part of the grid to another. Maybe another portion of the grid has delicious bolts that robots need?

Read Robot Zot

We will be using technology today. ipads preferably. Review with students how to use technology. I would use the computer, open a word document and write out rules for computers with students.

On the computer show students how to do the jigsaws drag and drop. This will probably be easy for all of the students to do, so let them practice and go as far as they can in one class session. As they leave have them tell you what number they reached. The number area is right here at the top of the page and looks like this ---->

Day 4

McPherson USD 418 Lesson Plan Template

Learning Outcome: Procedures

Date: August/SeptemberSubject/Grade: 1st-3rd

Learning Resources:

Book / Props / Activity
The Three Aliens and the Big Bad Robot / laptops

Opening -Prepare the Learner

Attention: How will I get the students’ attention?

As you begin this class review any rules/procedures that we haven’t covered that seem difficult for this class.

Read : The Three Aliens and the Big Bad Robot (paraphrase if necessary)

How are laptops and ipads different?

Are the technology rules different?

Is the way we interact with the ipad/laptop different? (we use mice, mousepad, trackpads, and touchscreens, some phones/computers you can talk to)

Let students explore code.org with the jigsaws on the computer.

Today we will explain to students how they can log in to code.org. You can either do it all group or if you think they would listen better explain to tables separately while the other kids are working.
