6.1 need for the study:
In CarakaSamhita under BhesajaChatusaka, ShadvirechaniyasatashatiyaAdhyaya, while enumerating fifty MahakshayaUdardaprashamana1 is mentioned. It contains ten drugs acting on Udarda. Cakrapani and Bhavaprakasha comments on Udarda as “Vartidastakara”2,3 - skin lesions characterized by elevation and wheal like patch. Though UdardaprashamanaDashemaniis enumerated by Caraka but explanation about Udarda is not available in CarakaSamhita. Only three times Udarda word has been used. On referring other texts it is understood that Sheetpitta, Udarda and Kotha are considered as clinical presentations with overlapping symptoms.4Analyzing the doshic involvement, Udarda is Kaphapittaja and Sheetapitta is Vatapittaja vyadhi.5,6 In order to difference between overlapping presentation a retrospective approach is required, so akaphapittaShamakadravya which acts on Udarda and mentioned in Udardaprashmanadasemani i.e. Saptaparna7 is taken up for the study to establish its action as Udardaprashmana drug.
6.2 Review of the literature:
Udarda is a disease caused by cold breeze which in turn vitiate Kaphaand Vata. These Dosha when associated with Pittabegin to travel in the body externally and internally produce the symptoms predominant of kapha.8Elevated patches resembling that produced by the sting of the wasp associated with severe itching and pricking pain, vomiting, fever and feeling of burning sensation are the characteristic features of udarda4. Elevated, reddish, irritating, round patches caused by Kaphaduring SishiraRituis also known as udarda8.UdardaprashamanaDashemaniincludesTinduka, Priyala, Badara, Khadira, Kadara, Saptaprna, Ashwakarna, Arjuna, Asana and Arimeda. The drugs of this Dashemaniare indicated in the condition known as Udarda1.Saptaparna(Alstoniascholaris) is one among the drugs mentioned in UdardaprashamanaDasemani.Saptaparna is having TiktaKasaya Rasa, LaghuSnigdhaGuna, UsnaViryaand KatuVipaka. It is Kaphapittahara in nature9. Saptaparna is also mentioned under Tikta skanda10, KashayaSkanda11, Kusthagna12, Sirovirachena13by AcharyaCharaka and under AargvadadiGana14and LakshadiGana15by AchrayaSushruta.
