FLEET TECHNICIAN

I.POSITION SUMMARY:

The Fleet Technician will serve the members and support the goals of Jefferson Energy Cooperative by:

Performing maintenance and repair on fleet vehicles and equipment to assure safe and dependable operation with a minimum of down time.

II.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

A.Reports to:Fleet Supervisor.

B.Supervises:None.

III.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Services and performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment as recommended in manufacturing service manuals/bulletins as well as JEC’s rebuild program on large vehicles.
  1. Performs repairs on vehicle and equipment breakdowns on the road or work site.
  1. Performs maintenance and repairs up to and including engine change outs andrepair or replacement of major hydraulic components on equipment or vehicles.
  1. Performs annual DOT inspections as required.
  1. Performs annual preventative maintenance inspections on bucket and derrick trucks.
  1. Assists with bi-annual dielectric test on bucket and derrick trucks.
  1. Assists in maintaining accurate files and records on vehicles and equipment.
  1. Assists in maintaining parts inventory and supplies for the fleet.
  1. Picks up parts and returns recyclables to suppliers when needed.
  1. Communicates with Fleet Supervisor concerning all parts and equipment neededfor repairs.
  1. Reads and studies service manuals and bulletins on all equipment and vehicles.
  1. Changes and repairs tires.
  1. Assistsin the proper disposal of waste materials created in the maintenance of the fleet.
  1. Assists in the maintenance of shop equipment.
  1. Reports to the Fleet Supervisor any problems discovered while performing routine maintenance on the fleet.
  1. Works with other employees within the Cooperative to promote the “team” concept at all times.
  1. Works with other employees in the shop to keep a clean, safe work environment at all times.
  1. Performs the duties of this position in accordance with established policies, practices and procedures so as to make a maximum contribution to the objectives of Jefferson Energy.
  1. Available for any work that may be required at times other than normal working hours.

NOTE: The above are major responsibilities of this position. The basic requirement of every position is to perform all tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

The FLEET TECHNICIAN shall be required to perform any other duties assigned in order to fulfill the objective of the cooperative.

IV.EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  1. Equipment and Parts Suppliers: Technical training, assistance and information and associated vendors.
  1. International/Freightliner/Kenworth: Technical assistance.
  1. Fleet dealers.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

FLEET TECHNICIAN

Job Knowledge, Training Experience:

Required:

Position requires an Associate’s or two year technical degree in a related field; Satisfactory Work Keys scores;however, experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirements.

Valid Driver’s License. A Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained within six months after employment.

Preferred:

Experience in mechanical related filed; Previous experience at another cooperative;

Abilities and Skills:

Required:

Competent computer skills with emphasis on manufacturers’ diagnostic websites and troubleshooting assistance websites;

Good oral and written communication skills;

The ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines;

Must be able to perform a variety of duties which require a high degree of accuracy with attention to detail;

Must be able to operate equipment such as forklift, bucket truck, derrick truck, and line equipment;

Must be able to test equipment such as buckets, derricks, mini-excavators and trenchers, operate forklift to handle parts; and

Must be able to operate diagnostic equipment.

Physical Effort and Working Conditions:

Occasionally lift up to 70 lbs. Occasionally operates heavy equipment. Frequently required to walk, stand, lift, bend and stoop. Must possess excellent hand-eye coordination. Due to bucket truck weight limits, the technician must weigh 280 lbs. or less.

This position is an outdoor position 75% of the time; 25% of the time indoors. This position may require work other than his/her normal working hours during power outages, storms or inclement weather, also overtime may be required in order to meet deadlines. May be required to travel overnight or longer for training seminars and workshops, or storm related activities/restoration.

Progression of JEC Fleet Technician

Apprentice

Fleet Tech:Entry level position.

Fleet Tech I:Entry level position with all Required and Preferred Job Knowledge,Training and Experience listed in Position Specifications.

Fleet Technician II:Minimum of two years satisfactory performance as a Fleet Technician I and recommendation of supervisor; Completion of Master ASE Technical Certification; Mobile Hydraulics Mechanic Certification; Specialized equipment training on bucket truck and digger/derrick trucks.

Fleet Technician III:Minimum of two years satisfactory performance as a Fleet Technician II and recommendation of supervisor; Demonstrated proficiency in all areas of job responsibilities.
