Open Forum

  • Latinos in Action - Parent shares that the conference was well attended and provided wonderful information that all students could benefit from. The club may exist at West Broward. It will be considered as a club for next year.
  • Builders’ Club – successful start to the service club; this club feeds into the Key Club at the high school level and the Kiwanis adult community club.
  • HOPE Sunshine Club – club based on suicide prevention. It is a FISK initiative. Began as a reaction to the increase in Broward’s suicide percentage. Upcoming 5k walk Hugs for Hope.
  • Diversity Club – supports minorities and LGBTQ
  • Parent shares that a district Teacher suggested starting a ‘Walk-Up” club that may start as a result from the idea of the walk-outs that have occurred most recently. This club would promote the idea of students walking up to students that normally would not speak to others. Parents suggest that adult guidance would be needed for the directive to be successful. Students have made proposals to begin programs that would encourage students to speak to different students during the lunch hour and in other social areas. This process will be considered as a future initiative possibly through a club that has already been established. Ideas for consideration: bracelet trading, wearing arm bands, bracelet collections, materials can be purchased to create bands.
  • Parent shares that she was happy about the way the walk out went because she is happy that the students are forming new bonds with different students. She shares that the venue, time, and place should be considered for the future. There is also concern for possible future walk-outs.
  • An additional parent expressed her concerns about the purpose of the walk-out. She says she spoke to Mr. Frazier and felt better about the process and decisions made regarding that process. An action plan was put in place with no position taken by the school or employees. Students were and will not be encouraged or discouraged to participate in walk-outs. Students that missed class will be given one additional day to complete assignments.
  • The possibility of increased parent volunteers in planned events for safety.
  • Opportunity for parents to speak at district school board meetings now occurs twice a month.

Motion to end the SAC meeting made by Dr. Garcia; Mr. Frazier seconded, and all agreed.

Meeting adjourned at 5:46 p.m.
