Delivery of Specialist Services
Specialist services in paediatric dentistry are provided to out-patients under local anaesthesia and inhalation sedation as appropriate.
The newly refurbished day-case general anaesthetic facility is situated on Floor 23, Tower Wing, where the paediatric dental team provide 6 day-case operating sessions per week for oral rehabilitation and minor oral surgery under general anaesthesia (GA), and 1 day-case operating session for exodontia.
There is also 1 weekly consultant-led in-patient GA session for children with complex medical disabilities at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
A multidisciplinary Hypodontia clinic is held weekly with our orthodontic and restorative colleagues.
Guy’s & St Thomas’ is a supra-regional Cleft Lip and Palate Centre and one of our part-time consultants in Paediatric Dentistry is a member of the multidisciplinary team supporting children with cleft lip and palate. She works in close association with the Plastic Surgeons, Orthodontists, Restorative Dentists, Oral Surgeons, Speech Therapists, etc.
The Department has become a major referral centre for children who sustain dento-alveolar injuries. These patients have complex paediatric dental needs and many require interdisciplinary care in the long-term.
Monthly multidisciplinary clinics are held with clinical genetics and orthodontics.
Facilities in the Department
The department has appropriate secretarial support, full library facilities in New Hunt’s House at the Guy’s campus, and research facilities.
The clinical facilities within the department include 13 dental units in the main clinical area. In addition, there are 5 dedicated Paediatric Dentistry surgeries each equipped for inhalation sedation. There are also two dental microscopes in the Department. The Orthodontic Department also has 13 dental units in the same clinical area which facilitates a very close working relationship between the two specialties.
