Clinical Track (CT) – Associate Professor or Professor:

This exercise will help you get a feel of your positioning, the requirements and where we can all work together to solidly get you to the categorical bars required for your promotion. It will help you and your division director self gauge if you are ready and will help the chair and committees formulate the support that will ultimately be required when each candidate is recommended for promotion.

This evaluation tool must be completed by the candidate and fully reviewed by the division director for promotion proposal review by the Department of Pediatrics Appointments and Promotions Committee.

Following are general definitions from the School of Medicine Guidelines on Appointments and Promotions:

  • Candidates for appointment or promotion to the rank of Associate Professor, CT shall be outstanding in clinical professional service and/or citizenship service or outstanding in teaching and at least very good in scholarship and the other categoryand shall maintain this standard until promoted to Professor, CT or throughout theircareers.
  • For appointment or promotion to the rank of Professor, CT, the candidate shalldemonstrate continuing outstanding performance in service or teaching; ahigher level of achievement in one or more of the other areas than a candidatefor the rank of Associate Professor, CT and shall maintain this standard throughtheir careers.

Faculty are evaluated in three areas 1) Teaching 2) Service 3) Scholarship; using the ratings described below:

  • Outstanding rating- Ongoing contributions and recognition at national and/or international levels
  • Excellent rating-Ongoing contributions and recognition at State and/or regional (multi-state) levels
  • Very Good rating-Ongoing contributions at local and institutional levels

Self Assessment Instructions:

Following are 3 sections (teaching, service and scholarship) for you to describe (using the examples as your guide) how your contributions fit the ratings of outstanding, excellent or very good. Please be sure that any items of importance/prominence you identify are included in your CV.

Each section lists examples of teaching, service and scholarship. These examples are copied directly from the SOM Guidelines on Appointments and Promotions (pages 19, 20 & 21) and are not exhaustive, but should help you demonstrate how you meet the School of Medicine Promotion Criteria.

Section 1:

Teaching rating markers:

Examples of teaching - Local and regional:

  • Preparation and presentation of material in a well-organized, current, andstimulating fashion as viewed by senior faculty of the School and Department,and by medical, allied health, and graduate students and/or house staff.
  • Continuous positive evaluations by students and/or house staff.
  • Effective mentoring and project direction for college students.
  • Participation in the design, organization, and/or presentation of a major course,clinical rotation, residency program, or subdivision thereof.
  • Ability to evaluate and counsel medical and allied health students and housestaff.
  • Appropriate participation in graduate medical education and post-doctoral education; leadership as a course or program director.
  • Effective mentoring of other faculty.
  • Recognition as an academic role model and mentor for medical, allied health,and graduate students and house staff.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and capability in involving patients in the teachingsetting.
  • Service as a faculty advisor for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows oras a faculty advisor for one of the medical student societies.
  • Authorship of books, chapters, or articles on clinical practice or education.

Local, regional, and/or national teaching

  • Service on the national board examining committees for one’s clinical specialty and/or preparing questions for national boards.
  • Design and course directorship for important local, regional, and nationalaccredited continuing medical education activities.
  • Development and leadership in educational workshops and training programsat the local, regional, and national level for students and trainees, other faculty,patients, or the community, sometimes as part of the meetings of nationalprofessional and/or scientific societies.
  • Receipt of teaching honors, awards, and prizes at the institutional and/ornational level.

  • Provision of high-quality patient care in the chosen specialty of the faculty member that is recognized locally and also regionally, nationally, and/or internationally.
  • Membership, participation, and leadership in the committees and governance of regional or national professional societies of the faculty member's field.
  • Participation and leadership in lay and community services, when appropriate.
  • Participation in committees and bodies advisory to government agencies and foundations.
  • Referral of patients from local, regional, national, and international sources external to Emory.
  • Receipt of honors, awards, and prizes from the institution, national entities, or the community for aspects of service.

Section 3 - Scholarship:

Examples of scholarship

  • Demonstration of a scientific, scholarly approach to a major field of clinical or basic science research.
  • Evidence of success in obtaining extramural research support. This will often be demonstrated by principal investigator status on individual funded clinical trials, by principal investigator status on local components of multi-site funded clinical trials, or by funded medical educational research.
  • Continuing productivity evidenced by primary authorship status in peer reviewed publications demonstrating appropriate scientific method, analysis, and evaluation of results of clinical research, biomedical projects, or educational approaches, with consideration of quality as well as quantity.
  • Participation as an author in the publication or reports of research projects, projects, clinical trials, team-based investigation, collaborative studies, and other observations in leading medical journals, with consideration of quality as well as quantity.
  • Authorship of important review articles, chapters, and/or books.
  • Ability to stimulate trainees toward scholarship in medicine and medical practice
  • Service on national and regional panels and boards such as study sections that advise federal and private funding entities on research proposals.
