The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards® is an independent, nonprofit organization governed by a board of directors, the majority of whom are classroom teachers. National Board Certification is a voluntary process developed by teachers and other educational stakeholders to recognize experienced teachers for the quality of their practice. This process is a separate certification program from the Maryland state certification and accreditation system. Teachers who participate in the National Board Certification professional development process have the opportunity to demonstrate advanced teaching knowledge, skills, and practice.

The work for National Board Certification will take the better part of two school years. Teachers report spending a minimum of 400 hours on the portfolio preparation and assessment process. The Prince George’s County Public Schools National Board Certified Teacher program, under the guidance of the Office of Talent Development, will provide support and resources for candidates pursuing National Board Certification. If you would like to hear more about National Board Certification or wish to launch your pre-candidacy, there will be a series of information meetings taking place at Charles H. Flowers High School.

All applications/materials are due by March 21, 2014 by 4:00 p.m. and should be sent to the Oxon Hill Staff Development Center, PGCPS Office of Talent Development, Room 206, attention: Rainya Miller. Scholarships are awarded to applicants whose applications are screened and meet the criteria outlined in this bulletin. The fee to participate in the NBPTS® process is $1,900. A one-time fee of $65 per candidate is due upon registration online with NBPTS®.

PGCPS will provide funding to selected scholarship recipients in the amount of $627.00. Once the PGCPS scholarship of $627.00 is applied to the $1,900 fee, the candidate will be responsible for the remaining balance of $1,273.00, in addition to the $65 application fee. If further scholarship funding is available from other sources, you will be notified, and that amount will be subtracted from the amount you are required to pay. Teachers completing this application will be notified no later than June 15, 2014 regarding the status of their application and availability of scholarship funding for the 2014-2015 National Board Certification scholarship. No fees are due until receipt of the 2014-2015 scholarship award letter.
