Title / Form and shape fabrication materials under supervision
Level / 2 / Credits / 10
Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are, under supervision, able to prepare, perform, and verify the forming and shaping of fabrication materials.
Classification / Mechanical Engineering > Engineering - Fabrication
Available grade / Achieved

Explanatory notes

1This unit standard is designed for people who are forming sheet, plate and sections in the fabrication industry under supervision. Forming can also include straightening.

2The fabrication industry involves working with a wide range of material types, shapes and thicknesses. Material types include low carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, aluminium alloys, copper alloys, and plastics. Shapes include sheet, plate, and sections.

3For credit, assessment must involve more than one material type, more than one shape and more than one thickness with a material range of either:

a0.4mm to 6mm sheet and plate;

or

b3mm plate upwards.

4Assessment must be across a range of forming and shaping operations. Forming may include hot or cold forming of seams, joints and stiffeners and use of standard hand and hand held power operated equipment.

5Worksite procedure refers to the documented procedures for the machine and/or worksite.

6Job specifications refer to client’s instructions, drawings, and/or contract.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Prepare for forming and shaping of materials under supervision.

Evidence requirements

1.1Materials are identified and selected in accordance with job specifications.

1.2Equipment is identified to enable forming process in accordance with job specification.

Rangeequipment includes all standard equipment used in the forming of light and/or heavy gauge material.

1.3Calculations for zero and mean radius are performed in accordance with worksite procedure.

1.4Hand operated equipment is set up to achieve job specified tolerances.

1.5Potential hazards are identified and preventative action taken in accordance with approved codes of worksite practice.

Outcome 2

Perform forming and shaping processes of materials under supervision.

Evidence requirements

2.1Materials are formed and shaped in accordance with worksite procedure.

2.2Material properties are restored after forming and shaping in accordance with worksite procedure.

Outcome 3

Verify forming and shaping of materials under supervision.

Evidence requirements

3.1Fabricated items are inspected and measured for compliance to job specifications.

3.2Corrective actions address the causes of non-conformance to job specifications in accordance with worksite procedure.

Rangecorrective actions include but are not limited to – straightening.

Please note

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
