51st ANNUAL LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN WALKING CARNIVAL

Sunday 11JUNE 2017 – STROMLO FOREST PARK CANBERRA

The ACT Race & Fitness Walking Club (ACT Walkers) on behalf of Racewalking Australia invite your members and race walkers affiliated with a National Athletics Association to participate in this year’s Annual Lake Burley Griffin Walking Carnival to be held on Sunday 11 June 2017.

This year the carnival will move from Weston Park to Stromlo Forest Park in an effort to streamline the carnival. All events will be conducted in one viewable location, Government demands will be reduced, and fewer volunteersrequired.

All events will be conducted on a 1 kilometre circuit on the cycling criterion track affording the walkers a smooth surface with a minimal rise at one end, and spectators a view of the walkers for most of the course.

The tradition will continue – the 10 & 20 mile events - while unable to be conducted on a scenic course down towards the lake due to busy roads and indistinct directions on the cycle path, will also be held on the main circuit, as will the various Fitness Walks.

The fitness walks are open to all, but participants in the race walking events must be members of a club affiliated with Racewalking Australia or an overseas IAAF affiliated athletic club.

Comprehensive details concerning entry procedures, volunteers and the conduct of the Carnival are below.

GENERAL INFORMATION

(1) VENUE

The venue for all events is Stromlo Forest Park, Opperman Avenue / Dave McInness Road. All events will be conducted clockwise on a 1 kilometre circuit on the cycling criterion track affording the walkers a smooth surface with a minimal rise at one end. Mostevents have a common start / finish line; the 5, 10 & 20 mile events will start the additional distance before the finish line.

There will be a big departure from the norm in relation to timing and results with the introduction of electronic chip timing for all events. This service is being provided by FlyerUltra Race Timing a locally based operator.

There are women’s and men’s toilets & showers located in the centre of the building near the track, and ample car parking.

(b) Clubs must ensure that all information required establishing a walker’s entitlement to awards is provided. Failure to do so may result in a competitor not receiving an award to which they may be entitled. Clubs are reminded they must submit all individual entry forms with the team entry fees.

AGE for all Racewalking Australia events is age on the day, and for Athletics ACT Championships age is as at 31 December 2017.

(3) ENTRIES

Entries close WEDNESDAY 24 MAY 2017. Competitors must complete and sign an individual entry form and submit it to their Club Secretary. Clubs must then insert handicaps where applicable before forwarding the forms and entry fees to Mr Robin Whyte, PO Box 1324, Queanbeyan NSW 2620.

Please show the correct handicap, which is the difference between the walkers expected time, as determined by the individual club’s handicapper, and the base time for the particular event, as listed above in item 2. For example, an U14 competitor expected to do 10.20 for the 2k would have a handicap of 1.0; the difference between the handicap base time of 9.20 & expected time of 10.20.

Please note that entries will not be accepted without the appropriate entry fees and signed individual entry forms.

Late entries cannot be accepted. This applies to both Race Walks & Fitness Walks. The processing of late entries by the Timing Provider would cost an additional fee of $100.

(6) Volunteers

The number of Volunteers / Officials, apart from Walk Judges, requiredto conduct the carnival this year is substantially reduced due to the introduction of electronic timing and the fact that all events are confined to one relatively short circuit. However help is always required and Clubs are asked to nominate anyone wishing to assist. It is most important that each Club provide a Walk Judge for the events commencing at 8.00am. Please complete enclosed Volunteers Form so that we can be sure all positions are filled and all volunteers informed of their duties prior to the day of the event.

On the enclosed VOLUNTEERS FORM please provide the names of volunteers and the capacity in which they are willing to help, or are considered best suited to assist. Each club is to nominate a responsible person to act on the Jury of Appeal in order that a panel of four (4) may be selected by the organising committee; and to advise the name of the Team Manager together with their Canberra address & telephone contact number.

Your continued support with the conduct of this event is very much appreciated by ACT Walkers, and ensures a smoothly run and successful carnival.
