Fremont Jaycees, January 20111

The Fremont Jaycees will be 75 years old officially in September 2011.

We are looking for members to be on the planning committee to celebrate this longtime achievement. Contact President Danielle if you are interested or look for a special contact from a board member to be on the committee!

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“Earn your success based on service to others,

not at the expense of others.”

Fremont Jaycees, January 20113

The Jaycees are in their ninth decade of service to their members’ communities and countries. Founded in St. Louis, Missouri in 1920, the Jaycees have grown to be the largest leadership training organization in the world. We offer our members, ages 21-41, the opportunity of self-improvement throughout community involvement.

Being a member of the Fremont chapter, in existence since 1936, you will have the opportunity to participate in projects and programs that benefit the community and our members. You will learn about yourself and others while you work, and ultimately grow as a person because of your experiences.

We believe that you can benefit from your membership in the Fremont Jaycees. We encourage you to attend one of our meetings or many events.

Remember, to change things we don’t like, we must get involved. Past president Ronald Regan, when speaking to the U.S. Junior Chamber said:

“If not you, then who?
If not now, then when?”

Super Shooters - For boys and girls to test their basketball skills.

Pitch, Hit & Run – For boys and girls to test their baseball skills.

Punt, Pass & Kick - For boys and girls to test their football skills.

Youth Football Games –For boys and girls to compete in tackle football, learn the fundamentals, play games and have fun.

Concession Stands – Our major fundraising source is through food concessions at JCF days, Concerts in the Park and Youth Football.

JCF Parade—We walk during this parade each summer.

The Fremont Jaycees hold their general membershipmeetings the fourth Tuesday of the month in the
Outpost Bar and Grille, 1220 E. 23rd Street, Fremont, NE

Being a Jaycee not only benefits the community, but is beneficial to you as well. The local and state Jaycees host a variety of training sessions and conventions to help you become a more rounded person and provide you with important leadership skills. Serving as a Jaycee provides the opportunity to develop strong relationships with other Jaycees.

We encourage members to be as active as their schedule permits. Some members help with a couple projects and events a year, while others help monthly. Members and non-members are welcome to attend our meetings and events.

Your annual dues include membership in the local, state and national Jaycee organizations. You will receive a local newsletter as well as state and national publications.

“Earn your success based on service to others, not at the expense of others.”

We invite you to become part of the Jaycees, an organization of young men and women (ages 21-40) who are making a difference in their world through volunteering.

The Junior Chamber offers its members unlimited opportunities for leadership development, networking, professional development, and personal growth, all while having fun!

Joining is simple- you can fill out your membership application online, after which you will be contacted within a couple days.

Membership dues are $52 for the first year and $49.50 per year afterwards. As a volunteer organization, we do not require attendance at our events. Instead, you decide what projects to get involved with. We do recommend spending at least 2 hours per month however; one hour for the General Membership Meeting, and another hour for the project of your choice!

Do you admire?

Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

Governmental leaders such as past President Gerald Ford

Sports heroes like basketball great Larry Bird

Registered nurse and former Miss America Kaye Lani Rae Rafko-Wilson

White inspired many in cancer fight

Reprinted in part from the OMAHA WORLD-HERALD

December 16, 2010

Susan White threw herself into the fight against lung cancer after she was diagnosed with the disease nearly three years ago — even though she knew any medical breakthrough most likely would come too late to help her.

White's recent fund-raising message to friends and co-workers at The World-Herald captured her unflagging spirit.

“I want there to be more treatment options (the sooner the better!)” she wrote. “I want there to be screening so that more people are diagnosed in the early stages, instead of the current situation where 80 percent of cases have spread before they are diagnosed. Most of all, I want there to be a cure, for lung cancer and all cancers.”

White, 44, died, Wednesday, December 15 with family members by her side at her home in Waterloo, Neb. She had been diagnosed in January 2008, even though she never smoked.

With her liver failing, White decided last week to forego the difficulties of further treatment and receive hospice care.

World-Herald readers learned of White's battle with cancer in January, when she wrote a gripping first-person account of her daily life that appeared under the headline: "For another week, a survivor.”

The article drew more than 200 letters from readers and numerous donations to cancer groups in her name. At one point in the article, White shared her thoughts on dying that she wrote in her diary.

“It's now 12:30 a.m. and I'm losing it, just a bit. I can't go to bed, because then all there is to do is think about it, and I start crying.

“Dying is such a weird concept. It's still off in the future enough, it doesn't seem any more real than the fuzzy knowledge we all have that we'll die someday. Except it is somehow a more concrete concept when you know that THIS is what you'll probably die of.”

White grew up on a farm near Surprise, Neb., about 30 miles south of Columbus. She was a graduate of RisingCityHigh School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

She joined The World-Herald in September 2002 after stints at smaller newspapers, including the Nebraska City News-Press, the Valley News in Shenandoah, Iowa, and the Columbus Telegram.

Her final staff position at The World-Herald was as an editor and writer in the Living section. She continued to come to the office until early October, all the while enduring numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation.

White's sister, Nancy Hula of Raymond, Neb., said her sister found “great joy” in simple tasks at home, from gardening to cooking to entertaining her five nieces and nephews.

“Susan had a quiet perseverance to try and be the very best she could be — going way beyond her career,” Hula said. “She had a lot of faith, a lot of integrity and, you know, she just had a good heart.”

Rest in Peace, our Dear Jaycee FriendSusan

Who are the Jaycees?
That is one question that we hope people in Fremont do not ask! We have been in this community for 75 years andit is good to getour name out, what we do, and what we can do for the community. We can dosomething about that by being visible. This is the plan of action that we need to take:

1. Wear Jaycee apparel and Jayceenametags if you have one at every Jaycee orchamber event.

2. Bring our Jaycee banner to everything.

3. Have a responsible, fun attitude about the Jaycees.

4. Go to Chambercoffees and activities. We are Chamber members, so each one of you is invited to go to Chamber events.

5.Go to City Council Meetings. We need to keep up on what is going on in our community.

6.Give people a chance to askyou..."Who are the Jaycees and what do they do?"

Come to a General Membership Meeting to find out how to properly answer thatquestion!
