Hunger Games Unit

Panem Chronicle (Evaluation)

DUE DATES:

o  Stage One: Monday, November 26 (through Ch. 9)

o  Stage Two: Monday, December 3 (through Ch. 18)

o  Stage Three: Monday, December 10 (through Ch. 27)

o  Final Project (fully edited and coordinated): Monday, December 17

For our Hunger Games unit, you will work in small groups in order to create a complete newspaper based on the events taking place in the novel.

For this assignment you will have several pieces to hand in:

1.  News Articles: each group member will contribute 3 complete news articles:

a.  photo,

b.  title & subtitle,

c.  byline & date,

d.  hook & 5 ws,

e.  quotation(s) from text and/or imagined but in character.

*note: the articles are due in stages. One article per 9 chapters of the text, per student.

  1. Advertising: each student creates 3 ads, using design principles we will review in class: the obvious Z, unity by repetition, unity by proximity, emphasis by isolation, emphasis by contrast, emphasis by placement, balance & asymmetrical tension, focal point

3.  Complete project, using a newspaper layout or template: articles share pages based on content, etc. advertising, page numbers and date on each page, etc.

4.  Reflection: a 300-400 reflection on the process, outlining the cooperative learning skills used by the group members.

The first step in this process is to think about what you find particularly newsworthy in the first 7 chapters. Please jot down one idea per chapter for this stage of the project. While you are reviewing the chapters, pleas also think about what ads might appeal to various characters or demographic of characters.

Now that you have thought of your own, original news stories based on your individual reading of the first 9 chapters, please work using consensus—talking through the ideas and compromising with each other—until you agree which stories each member of the group is interested in covering. Ideally, the stories will link together so that the tone of the newspaper is relatively consistent. Also, please aim to cover different chapters.

Ideas for Advertising: at this stage please also determine the first advertisement for each member of the group, based on the first 9 chapters of the text. Again, I will be looking for evidence of cooperative learning and consensus-building.
